N/A

Contrarian Investing. Seasonality is very important to him. He does most of his buying in November and December during tax loss season. From March through to that point, it is very rarely that he Buys stocks. In November and December, it is very rare that he sells winners, because he wants to defer taxes. He is also looking at individual stocks and what they do over the course of a year. A lot of stocks have cycles, which can help with buying and selling. It’s an interesting time of the year because he used to call more CEOs and CFOs in August, and found a lot of them were away from their desks, often for a number of weeks. He now answers his calls and emails, but is not at his desk quite as often at this time of the year.

COMMENT

Doesn’t think the recent fall in price is serious. They discovered accounting irregularities, which can be very, very serious. Haven’t filed their financial statements. Changed accountants which seemed to create some difficulties. Have been given a Stay from the NYSC market, and have written a letter of compliance. They should be back up to date by the middle of October. His Initial Sell Target price is over $3. A great company. They have money in the bank and zero debt. Insiders own a whack of the company. This company is in traffic flow, and traffic flow is very much needed.

COMMENT

Thinks this has a lot of upside. Very, very diversified. Into software, hardware and aeronautics. A tremendous company. The balance sheet is very reasonable. Revenues have been going up. Recently instituted a dividend, and when a company does this, usually for the next few years that company does better than the stock markets. His target price is $18+.

COMMENT

Sold his holdings. Decided to get out because of the C Series. Delays plus the debt load had him scared. Have overpromised and underdelivered on the C series. He questions whether they will get it up as they say they will. They are a leader in aviation trains. Expects they will have tremendous support from the Canadian government going forward.

COMMENT

Whenever he buys a stock, he always chooses an initial Sell target. That grounds him from the get-go. This company did very much what he expected when they IPO’d a few years ago. In the majority of the cases, a year later, the stock is down in value. This is a leader in its field. He doesn’t follow this company, but does like leaders.

HOLD

Sold half his position after a double. An activist investor wanted to see changes in the company as they were not happy with how things were going. However, to him the management has done a tremendous job since they came in. The stock price has moved up quite a bit. The company was having an awful lot of difficulties before that. There are good activist investors, and there are some that he highly questions. In almost every case when an activist comes in, the stock price goes up, as happened in this case. Can see this going to double digits.

DON'T BUY

Bank stocks could go higher if they decide to have stock splits. They have been increasing dividends. Every 10-15 years, even Canadian banks seem to have an implosion. He would not be buying into Canadian banks at this point in time. Prefers the US banks.

RISKY

This is very much a penny play. Coffee is an incredible space with huge mark-ups, but as we can see, closer to home, Second Cup (SCU-T) is looking to retrench and eliminate their dividend. Wouldn’t throw his mortgage money at it, but for somebody who wanted to speculate, it could be worthwhile. It could also disappear quickly.

TOP PICK

(A Top Pick Aug 12/13. Down 27.27%.) Not dealing well with the slowdown in the agricultural sector. Revenues went down to 37% over the past year. New management has been very transparent. His Initial Sell Target is $3.49. Even with the drop in revenues, they only lost about $600,000 because they cut a lot of workers from about 270 to 170. They are very, very diligent on expenses.

PAST TOP PICK

(A Top Pick Aug 12/13.) He has a tremendous amount of cash on the sidelines, as opportunities present themselves. Would love to deploy more of the cash as he is not getting much return on it.

PAST TOP PICK

(A Top Pick Aug 12/13. Up 60.86%.) He keeps riding this one higher. His Initial Sell Target is around $28. Revenues went down about 4% last quarter. Income has gone down, but they are still making money. There is a lot more competition in their space. France is the #1 market, but they are also in Spain and a number of other countries. Cut their dividend this year, and the stock price went up. He still sees a lot of upside.

HOLD

The key in this case is the horse and the jockey. He likes John Cheng, who has a good track record. This is going to be a long haul. There are very few companies that have more noise about them. His Initial Sell Target price is close to $18. If they start to really turn around, he can see the company going far further than $18. They still have lots of difficulties. Management have announced the end of layoffs and are now looking at potentially hiring. That is a major curve in the cycle for him, so he is happy to hold it. When a company like this turns, it can turn fast and can really rocket.

DON'T BUY

This is a sector that is dramatically out of favour. He keeps looking at them, and then he looks at the debt loads, the debt load on almost every one of these companies is horrible. A lot of them have also been listed for less than 10 years. So he wouldn’t buy because of those reasons. This one really doesn’t appeal to him.

COMMENT

Looking at this right now. An absolutely tremendous payout. He doesn’t know the company well enough to Buy into it, but he loves dividends. This company is giving money back all the time. 9% dividend yield.

COMMENT

This is too expensive for him now. They have had a lot of changes and have taken over another company, perhaps two.
