PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Mar 1/05. Up 18%.) Still likes. All of the banks are reporting very good return on equity and this one has been reporting ROE’s around 20%. Earnings could go from $3.16 last year to $3.55 this year and even $3.80 next year. Yield of 3.4%.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Mar 1/05. Up 30.2%.) Still likes and would recommend buying at current prices. About 70% natural gas, which has a lot, more leverage than crude oil. Could see cash flow approaching $9 this year and possibly $10 next year.
BUY
Likes the bank stocks. Has relative safety. Currently, they are priced fairly well plus a 3% or better yield. The Royal has made some real improvements, especially in the US operations. ROE is running around 23%. A good long-term hold. You will do better with the Commerce (CM-T) or Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS-T).
HOLD
Now that it has come off a little, the yield is more attractive.
DON'T BUY
Being added to the S&P/TSX 60. This could create a little boost as index funds try to establish a position but doesn't think it will make major changes. Prefers others in this area.
BUY ON WEAKNESS
This is and will continue to be a longer-term story. It can produce out of the oil sands at a profit, at today's prices. A viable place to be looking for future development. Would consider buying a few dollars less.
SELL
Used to have a lot on the goal. One product was for burn victims which they spun off. Has been working on a flat panel display for a number of years. There is a question whether the market has passed it by.
DON'T BUY
Has been under pressure because of competition on their stents. Some controversy as to whether the coated is better or not. Because of this, it is more of a speculation than an investment.
BUY
Making good progress with their National Bank Financial. Doing extremely well and profitable. Good management.
BUY
Had a bit of a setback a little while ago which seems to have been straightened out. Should do well in the current environment.
DON'T BUY
He has been de-emphasising the oil service side in the current environment. When commodity prices start to fluctuate like there has been, service companies tend to get hit fairly hard.
BUY
Over the next 15 months, they have a good increasing production profile.
DON'T BUY
Likes this company long-term. The biggest hesitation in buying has been the threat of a recession or slowdown in the US economy. Until there is a clearer direction on the North American economy he will just sit back and watch.
DON'T BUY
7.6% yield. The problem with the smaller breweries is the economies of scale and whether they are able to compete. To compete, they have to have very loyal customers. Not sure if in the long-term they have the scale to compete effectively.
HOLD
Have very good properties. Well situated in the oil/gas market.
