Agrium (AGU.TO)

BUY
Considered a growth stock. He peeled a little off a while ago. He is looking at adding to his positions at this point. There was less fertilizer used this past year. You can get away with not adding fertilizer for one year but then yields go down and you can’t skip the next year. Fertilizer market has been in the dumps. He feels we are at the bottom of the fertilizer model.
SELL
Was bullish on Fertilizer stocks but grain yields have been very high, so fertilizer stocks’ earnings are decelerating.
BUY
(Market Call Minute) likes it
PAST TOP PICK
(Top Pick Jun 11/09, Up 3.76%) Still loves it. Could have been a top pick this time.
BUY ON WEAKNESS
He has a model price of $64.36, a 13% upside. If the stock price got down to $47-$48, that would be a really good Buy.
BUY
Likes fertilizer longer-term. As emerging countries urbanize and the middle class develops, they are going to need more protein-based diets. Farmers didn't buy a lot of fertilizer last year and stock prices dropped. Very attractive entry point.
TOP PICK
Sits right in the middle, basically supplying fertilizers, pesticides and seeds. Sales in both North America and South America. Could do very well over the next year or two. A little early, so be patient, by a little and then wait.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick May 15/09. Up 7.15%.) Doesn't care for the agriculture space right now.
BUY
Long-term prospects are excellent. A market trading Stock, so you have to be nimble. Good for a long-term hold but extremely volatile. Prices look like they are starting to firm up.
HOLD
Just reported a loss of $.04 a share. Agricultural stocks got hit very hard in 2008. Farmers now have to apply more fertilizer this year to make up for what was neglected. Season for fertilizer/agriculture is from August through to December.
TOP PICK
This should benefit more from the actual farmers and their businesses. Potash (POT-T) and Mosaic (MOS-N) are more institutional. Improvement in farmers’ margins will directly affect this company's sales.
DON'T BUY
Historically, the stock moves higher from the beginning of March through until the end of April. It then has difficulties until the middle of July. Seasonal strength is from the middle of July through to the end of the year.
COMMENT
Everything on a macro level and fundamental basis points to wanting to be in the agricultural sector but he just needs to see 4 to 6 weeks of positive movement. Possibly a time to start looking.
BUY ON WEAKNESS
Working down to its 200 day moving average of about $60. Fertilizer plays seem to be extremely volatile. This one is now getting into a territory where you can begin to look at it. Would prefer it 15% or so lower. (See Top Picks.)
BUY
Looking at a good crop developing in Australia, concerns about wheat pricing and suppliers getting hit. He prefers Viterra (VT-T), which is handling as opposed to seed sales and fertilizers. Both are cheap stocks but be prepared for volatility.
