Agrium (AGU.TO)

BUY
Fertilizer plays are the way he would go to play the Asian agricultural sector. Potash currently has spot prices of $1000 plus per ton. This will not be sustainable but it looks like prices are going up.
HOLD
The whole issue here is the growth in earnings. Also produce nitrogen fertilizer. More of this goes into corn. Also have the Alberta advantage of getting cheap gas. 13X next year’s earnings.
BUY
Thomson Financial forecast shows quite a decline in agricultural stocks in 2010. He is betting that this decline is because people don't know what the input costs will be. As you get into 2009, people will be sharpening their pencils for the 2010 earnings and he would be surprised if they weren't significantly higher than they are today.
DON'T BUY
(Market Call Minute.) Multiples are not quite as extreme as in Potash (POT-T) but it is priced for perfection.
BUY ON WEAKNESS
Likes all of the nitrogen, potash and phosphates. This one is mostly nitrogen. Cheaper multiple than potash. On weakness, a definite Buy.
BUY
Same story as Potash (POT-T) but he likes the entry point on this one very much.
BUY
(Market Call Minute.) Share price is going to be somewhat flat because of the UAP (?) takeover. This is a great opportunity to buy it cheap. Buy lots.
BUY
(Market Call Minute.) The model price is $72.16, which is a 15% positive differential.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick May 2/07. Up 61%.) Sold his holdings, but would probably repurchase under $60.
BUY
Has a nice, well-defined support level. It is currently at the low end of that, which is the buying time. You have to be careful, because if it drops below the support, you've changed phases and the 2 peaks in the chart will be the high for a while. You can buy now, but put a stop at about $53.
COMMENT
Have quite exciting retail kind of operation in the US. In Southeast Asia and Latin America, they have re-priced the potash up hugely. The only negative that he knows of is that there is a good chance of extraordinarily good crops coming through in Brazil and Argentina, which might reduce the need of more fertilizing. Has already gone up strongly so beware of a downfall.
HOLD
It’s done very well, don’t commit new money to it. It’s riding the whole agriculture sector.
WEAK BUY
As long as the agricultural prices and demand remain high it’s a fine place to be. May have gotten ahead of itself in the short run. Not a value play right now.
TOP PICK
Likes Potash, but Agrium is just that much better. A great entry point. They are in China, as well. Long on this.
TOP PICK
Made a massive acquisition in the U.S that should close. The earnings are going up very fast. In a very nice sector. Don’t take a full position right now, wait for a correction.
