Canadian Oil Sands (COS.TO)

BUY
Likes the oil sands and this is a good way to participate. You will need to be patient. Prefers Petrobank (PBG-T). Probably a takeover somewhere down the road.
DON'T BUY
Yield that’s less than 5%. Not going to see real earnings in the oil sands for some time. This is more of a play on the future of oil sands. There are other places that you could put your money in oil sector to get a better yield. A very long-term play. Don’t expect to see the stock price rise.
WAIT
Thinks depending on the royalties, it will have an impact. Extracting oil from oil sands is the most expensive method to produce oil. If the royalties are too high then the producers may look elsewhere. Wait for the royalties to be announced before buying.
DON'T BUY
Most of the stocks involved in the oil sands are having overhead problems. Stronger Cdn$ is not helping. There are also an environmental concerns and costs. The sector is toppy and the stock is running into headwinds.
BUY
Thinks the major expansion at Syncrude is just about over meaning that the cash flow from operations are going to explode, meaning that the dividend payout will go up quite a bit. A long-term annuity for you.
WAIT
Worst-case scenario $28-30. You should wait. See if its drops, and buy below $30. buy companies with less exposure to oil sands.
BUY
Prospects going forward are very good. Good balance sheet and they have their finances in place. Could possibly increase their distributions. 5.25% yield.
HOLD
Unlike many in the oil sands, they have completed their capital spending. Middle eastern interests have recently been buying into the oil sands.
PAST TOP PICK
(Past Top Pick Dec 29/06. No change.) Was a disappointment. An oil weighted name and he had a bullish view on oil but this one did not respond. Offsetting it was the increase in the Cdn$. Long term Hold.
HOLD
One of the issues of the oil sands is the high cost of operation. She prefers straight equities rather than trusts. Well-managed company and if you are not concerned with volatility, continue to hold.
COMMENT
Probably the pre-eminent trust in the trust universe. Has done spectacularly well. There is a lot of speculation that they might increase their distribution.
TOP PICK
Could be an acquisition target going forward.
WAIT
Very leveraged to the high price of oil. The price of oil may go up a little bit more in the near term, but usually in the fall there is a correction in the price. Wait for a correction.
BUY
This has always been the most expensive oil sands plays, but since all the other ones have started to move it has lagged.
COMMENT
The beauty of this is that their expansion and growth is already behind them so they don't face the possibility of increasing costs.
