PotashCorp (POT.TO)

PAST TOP PICK

(Top Pick Oct 29/09, Up 36%) It was a call option strategy. Wished he knew it might get bought out. POT always has some of the highest option premiums in Canada. It was a tough call on what to do with the buy-out decision. He thinks what the Canadian gov’t is doing is the right thing to do.

COMMENT
Gov’t blocking take-over attempt – looks like a negative for the shareholders. How valuable is the property to the company if the gov’t is going to step in and change the rules. It sends a negative signal to companies trying to buy up Canada’s natural resources.
DON'T BUY
The gov’t decision is very negative for stocks in the sector. If market start to believe that no bid will go through, then it would be very negative for other companies.
COMMENT
A political football. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Thinks it makes sense to let BHP buy it. Suspects BHP could up the price.
COMMENT
There is an indication that there will be an increased bid even though BHP said there won't be. Just reported good numbers.
PAST TOP PICK
(Top Pick Aug 4/10, Up 32% total return) Thinks stock is worth a lot more than BHP is offering. It’s a matter of whether institutional investors will take the quick dollar or wait.
SELL
No one else can afford to buy them and BHP is out of the bidding. IF the deal doesn’t go through then it goes down.
COMMENT
If government blocked the bid it could be detrimental to the stock.
HOLD
The offer is probably a fully priced offer, but is fair to the BHP shareholders also. It is the single most important nutrient company on the planet. He doesn’t see a competing bid coming in for POT. He would not be disappointed if the deal did not go through.
DON'T BUY
BHP Billiton (BHP-N) has made an offer. There are rumblings about China companies coming in. There is still a month to go. Would prefer Agrium (AGU-T).
COMMENT
(Market Call Minute.) If you are a little bit of the trader/gambler, you could Buy.
COMMENT
BHP Billiton (BHP-N) has an offer on the table but doesn't think the deal will work as it is not a good deal for Saskatchewan. If you are trading, he would be inclined to let it go and buy at a lower price.
HOLD
BHP Billiton (BHP-N) has an offer on the table at $130 and there is speculation that another bid could be coming in. Long life asset and wouldn't be concerned about continuing to hold. He expects a deal will go through.
PARTIAL SELL
BHP Billiton (BHP-N) would like to acquire them but the market is indicating the price should be closer to $160-$165. If you own, you could sell half your holdings at the current price and hope for a higher takeover on the balance.
N/A
POT hit a 52-week high today. The market is expecting a higher bid. BP put in 130. Something will materialize. Potentially a sovereign wealth fund is the most likely acquirer. Thinks you should hang on. BHP doesn’t know what it is facing in the form of mining taxes in Australia. No position in BPH.
