Mosaid (MSD.TO)

COMMENT
It's in the right sector and thinks it will go higher. If you like technology, he suggests you go with an E.T.F. (XIT-T).
DON'T BUY
Semiconductor group has had a very difficult time over the last number of months. Studies show that only 20% of semiconductor stocks have a positive price trend and the rest have been selling off. He looks for sectors that have sold off, but wants individual stocks that despite the weakness did not go down. This is not one of those companies.
COMMENT
A good portion of the earnings is coming out of their patents. Difficult to put a value on a company with a revenue stream based on patents. Probably cheap but doubt if they would have the same valuation as a company that is actually making a product.
DON'T BUY
The driving force of their patent enforcement has left. This is a combination of intellectual property company as well as actual instruments for testing. Their patent portfolio runs out in about 4/5 years.
BUY
Earnings growth is pretty good. Has slipped in his database to 287. Earnings expected to go from $1.34 to $1.92. Have been successful in enforcing their patent and expects it to continue to be. At 12 X PE it is attractive.
BUY
Ranks in the top 3rd of the database. Have very good patents on D-RAM memory stuff and they are suing a lot of people. Earnings are expected to grow from $0.86 to $1.25. Reasonably priced.
DON'T BUY
Has increased its dividend by 60%, but in the meantime the stock is not moving much. Had a nice comfortable niche at one time, but over the last couple of years seemed to have struggled. Not an area that he would be too interested in. Consider having a basket of these stocks to broaden the risk.
WEAK BUY
Just above half in his database model. Earnings estimates have been shaved by 4% over the last 60 and 90 days. Overall earnings for the April 2006 year are expected to go from $0.94 to $1.25.
DON'T BUY
Would leave it for the people who know more about litigation. Up and down like a yo-yo. In courts with Samsung and Nvidia (NVDA-Q).
BUY
Good cash flow. Solid portfolio. Recieving royalites globally. Very compelling risk vs. return.
WEAK BUY
A very controversial stock. Had a court case and in anticipation of a settlement, had a wonderful rise from July of last year which meant it was way over bought. AT $20 there should be support. If you buy, set a price you are willing to lose, eg $1 and get out if it hits that. A very speculative stock.
BUY
Has cash flow, but the biggest value of this stock is in patents. Won a case against Samsung, but not a lot of disclosure on settlement and length of patent. Difficult to judge fundamental valuations, but if it can have similar arrangements with the major semi-conductor companies, ther is probably more upside than downside.
TOP PICK
An intellectual property company. Owns over 100 patents on D-Rams (memory chips). Has a bunch of clients who license out their technology. Mosaid is suing Samsung and Infinion. Feels that Mosaid has a very good case. Very volatile and depends on a coutroom and jury.
WEAK BUY
Ranks poorly in the data base model because chips are going to hell in a hand basket due to large inventories. However, they have an extremely broad patent portfolio and are getting good traction in their patent lawsuit versus Samsung. Wildly speculative.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Aug 24/04. Up 40%.) Just had a breakout. Still a good BUY.
