Mosaid (MSD.TO)

TOP PICK
Intellectual property. License their DRAM technology and have pretty much signed up 100% globally. Expecting $2.30 earnings this year and they pay $1 dividend giving a yield of about 4.5%. Trading at less than 10X earnings. About $100 million in cash, about $9 a share.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick June 22/09. Up 66.39%.) Still a buy but prefers Wi-Lan (WIN-T). (See Top Picks.)
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Feb 11/10. Down 3.88%.)
TOP PICK
Did a secondary issue a week and a half ago and he bought it. Growing earnings, unique position. Exciting contracts. 4% dividend and growing earnings.
TOP PICK
Licenses intellectual property for semiconductors in the telecommunications market. Over the last 6 months they've signed Micron (MU-Q) and re-signed Samsung. On the telecommunications side they've signed Sony, Samsung, Electronics and Nokia. Very cheap. Management has raised guidance to $2.60 in earnings this year. Have about $4-$5 net cash. No debt. 4.5% yield.
TOP PICK
Nice portfolio of royalties off communication and processing chips. Cheap. 6% yield. Earnings of $2 a share and growing.
TOP PICK
Likes the royalty structure. Communication patents are quite interesting. Expect they will also have follow-up from the D-RAM patents. Gives him a yield of 6%. Earnings are $2 and will probably grow to $2.10-$2.50 2.5 years down the road. Trading at 6X earnings.
TOP PICK
Patent portfolio on both semiconductors and wireless communications. 7.7% dividend. Expected to earn $1.97 for April/09 (up 22%). April/10 forecast to $2.28 (up 16%). That is against a 5.7X PE. Thinks it will continue to be successful with their patent portfolio. Also have a skunk works where they are working on some interesting pieces relating to flash memory for blisteringly fast responses. If things are successful it could have a 50% lift.
DON'T BUY
Is a play on patents. Claims on patent infringement. A difficult stock to own. Would rather have a recurring revenue theme then this type.
DON'T BUY
2 names operate in the intellectual property world that investors like to talk about. Mosaid (MSD-T) and Wi-Lan (WIN-T). The space is attractive, but the difficulty is forecasting the outlook. Some of their contracts come up in 2009 so you could see a cash flow shortfall.
COMMENT
Prefers Wi-Lan (WIN-T), which has a better outlook. There are a lot of positive changes going on in the company. Very good patent portfolio.
DON'T BUY
Long-term chart shows stock going from $5 to $35 where it peaked and then went sideways. Resistance is about $29 with a bottom of about $23. At its current price, the reward of $29 is small while the risk of $23 is quite large.
DON'T BUY
Ranks 204, just out of the top 25%. Earnings estimates have been shaved by 5%. Has a 13 P/E on a 21% earnings growth. Basically a patent portfolio play as they own a ton of patents related to D-RAM.
DON'T BUY
Not a big fan. Sordid history with a few lawsuits that they have participated in. Not enough positive check marks.
BUY ON WEAKNESS
Has a patent portfolio that revolves around the D-rim space. Expected to earn $2.04 in 07, a 14 P/E and expected to move up to $2.38, a 12 P/E. Wait for the Tech pullback.
