Brookfield Asset Management Inc (A) (BAM.A.TO)

BUY

One of the finest alternative asset management teams globally. By buying the top company, you are getting investment stakes in all the different subsidiaries. Good management.

COMMENT

Has always felt this was the best way to participate in all the other Brookfield companies, as you got a combination of everything. A great Canadian success story. A good, long term way to invest in stable, cash flow generating businesses.

COMMENT

A good company and is well-managed. Has a pretty good dividend growth record. The question mark on this more recently has been Brazil, but he is sure they will get through it okay.

COMMENT

Had owned this in the past and probably should still own it. Very well-run with a “Best in class” management. A very good, diversified company.

COMMENT

In the last number of years, this has been moving more and more of the business to actually being an advisor or fund manager, versus directly owning the assets. There has been a major shift in the last 5-6 years in the landscape of investments. Of all the money that went into mutual funds in the last 3 years, 8X of all funds put together went into the Vanguard funds. Long-term, he thinks there is going to be more assets moved into the space, more assets that have a target performance around it, and you are going to see earnings increase.

COMMENT

This is one where you have to trust management. They have done a great job and will continue to do so. Focused heavily on real estate. If interest rates flatten out, the appreciation of real estate probably finally comes to an end, especially in commercial real estate. Probably a decent investment. You get nice dividends and it will gradually grow.

COMMENT

He sold his holdings, because he felt it was going to kind of move sideways from here. Because they own a bunch of different assets, you have to think of it not from a PE basis, but from a NAV basis. It pays a nice dividend.

COMMENT

Brookfield Asset (BAM.A-T) or Brookfield Infrastructure (BIP.UN-T)? Between the 2, her preference would be this one. It is much more diversified, plus it has interest in Brookfield Infrastructure. It gives access to their fund management side, the private equity funds. That is also where senior management executives own their shares. Dividend yield of 2.2%.

COMMENT

Very hard to ascertain what this company actually owns at specific times, so it is hard for analysts to give readings. This is more of a diversified financial, so you are probably not going to see massive growth. They are starting to make their corporate structure a little cleaner, with the splitting off of some of their office properties. (See Top Picks.)

COMMENT

This has been a great performer long-term, so it’s perfect for long-term accounts like RESP’s. Run by a very smart management team with a very long track record. They’ve gone from direct holding of real estate assets to more of a fee generating management company. This gives higher margins and they are able to leverage outside investors as well. Not a cheap stock.

BUY

This is a good choice because historically, on a seasonal basis, it goes right through until the middle of May each year. We are currently in the period of seasonal strength. Chart shows that it has recently started moving on the upside and broke above its previous highs, and is currently outperforming the market.

COMMENT

Has held this in the past. It has a reasonable dividend, and looks like it is kind of consolidating, and this could go on for a bit. Until we see things a little clearer for the future, he is sitting on the sidelines.

BUY

(Market Call Minute.) One of the best run companies in Canada, and you can buy it here.

HOLD

A great business. One of the best group of investors in all of Canada. Very sharp, shrewd. They know exactly what areas to be in. It is a growing business. They have a fee for service business and look to deploy capital in interesting and innovative ways. He would wait for a 10% pullback.

BUY

He likes this business. There is a loose base and you could call it a triangle. Below there is a nice little support there. It could come back to the trend line. It is a really good name and they are good managers of assets. He may buy this one. Nice dividend and they run a really good business.
