Alcan Aluminum (AL.TO)

DON'T BUY
Has apprehensions about companies that are dependent on big global growth and negatively impacted by a strong Canadian $. Demand from China for aluminum seems to be slowing down. Have been selling recently.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Oct 12/04. Down 6%.) Still thinks the aluminum story is good. A little surprised that it hasn't done better than it has. Still a believer.
TRADE
Doesn't follow closely, but feels that in 2005/06, economies are going to weaken and base metals will also weaken.
BUY
Not sure why it hasn't done better.
BUY ON WEAKNESS
A cyclical so will have corrections. The company has smoothed itself out in the cycles. Buy at a lower price.
TOP PICK
Benefiting from the growth in China and that Chinese producers are terrible polluters and are being shut down. Very positive for global supply. The spin-off of their flat rolled will be positive on the price. Trading at 11 X earnings in '05.
TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Sept 30/04. Down 3%.) Spinning out the rolling mill side. $6 billion in sales which will clear $2.8 billion of debt. This company is as big as Alcoa, yet trades at a multiple point discount.
WATCH
You will want to see if you can get above the peaks in the mid $60's and if so it can go quite a ways. If the US$ rises, it will probably fall back into a trading range.
BUY
One of his best blue chips. A good solid blue chip hold.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Aug 6/04. Up 22%.) Still likes, but would try to buy in the high $50's. Moving on offers being made for their rolled products division.
BUY
Likes. Expect to trade out of this group in 6/8 months.
BUY
Likes what they are doing. Merger with Pechene was good. Bringing their cost structure down. Markets still look relatively strong. Reasonable valuation.
BUY
Likes the basic commodities sector and this company.
TOP PICK
Stock is down due in part to the lagging price of aluminum. Chinese government has just put in some controls to reduce the exporting of their aluminum. Aluminum is expected to go over $0.90.
DON'T BUY
Aluminum is completely recyclable and replacable by other materials, so if the pice gets too high, manufacturers can switch. Current price is high, but on the other hand, they need tremendous amounts of energy. Likes at $40.
