Alcan Aluminum (AL.TO)

BUY
Both Alcoa (AA-N) and Alcan have struggled a bit here because of higher energy costs. China has been producing a little more aluminum internally than was previously thought. It's probably at the bottom and he can see aluminum prices improving and their margins widening.
BUY
Is hoping that we are seeing it bottoming out. It has a good future. Feels the materials sector is in a secular incline and that there's going to be more and more demand for aluminum and other metals in construction going forward. Well positioned and trading at quite attractive levels.
DON'T BUY
Has been a huge disappointment. May be time to get out of it. Seriously considering selling.
BUY
Alcan (AL-T) and Alcoa (AA-N) have not been participating in the strong market that we've had for metals. Partly because of high energy costs. Alcan is sheltered with extremely low cost hydo electric generating capacity, so prefers Alcan and has been buying it.
BUY
Still buying.
DON'T BUY
Seasonal strength is from the end of October to the end of January. Has made a profit 8 times out of 10. Technically it doesn't look good and just broke a key support level a couple of days ago. Negative earnings momentum.
BUY
Continues to buy. Has been a disappointing performer. Aluminum prices, unlike other metals, has not moved dramatically. China is imposing taxes to limit their own exports. A good investment at this price.
HOLD
Has been a real disappointment. Holding the stock, but not adding to it. Has a dominant position in the field. A weak hold for him,
WEAK BUY
Easier to bring on more than other commodities. Aluminum is not so capacity constrained as other ores. Probably reasonable value.
BUY
Looking at the overall earnings and cash flow estimates for 2006, this one ranks as one of the cheapest if you believe $10 a share of cash flow. If you own, consider averaging down.
DON'T BUY
Dropped down to its book value earlier this year and then bounced to the low $40's but is heading right back down again. When a stock does that, it is not promising. Wouldn't be surprised if it dropped to 20% below book. Wouldn't look at it until about $28/30. Earnings have not been coming through.
DON'T BUY
Aluminum prices are very strong, but the Pechene acquisition has been slow to integrate. and now the global economy is starting to slow down.
WEAK BUY
Statistically cheap, aluminum looks in a little better shape, but not acting very well. What's happening in the short term is China has been a net exporter of aluminum in the last little while. If you have a longer term view, it's still a great entry point.
BUY
This stock drives him crazy. Every time he thinks there's going to be a breakout, it drops right back again. Doesn't reflect the fundamentals for aluminum. Likes the company.
HOLD
Electricity costs are so high, 70% of the cost of aluminum. Keeps on getting hit. Thinks it can't go much lower.
