TOP PICK
Becton Dickinson (BDX-N)

A healthcare name in devices. They have the Bard C R (BCR-N) acquisition that should close before the end of the year, which will give them a mid-single digit accretion and nice cost synergies. They are in the devices space, where capital spending worldwide is strong and growing. They are good about using dividends to return capital to shareholders. Dividend yield of 1.3%. (Analysts' price target is $234.50.)

COMMENT
Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (B) (BRK.B-N)

In an interesting spot. Has a multitude of assets and they are great allocators. They have the ability to take a longer-term view on investments. He is more tactical. Prefers to pick and choose assets that go into a portfolio in order to figure out the timing more precisely. Not a bad holding, but not for him.

DON'T BUY
Blackstone Group LP (BX-N)

An amazing time in the cycle to buy things like this. A little more hedged to equity focus in its mandate mix. As a result of their portfolio blend, you want to buy an asset manager when markets are doing well. However, when markets are going well, they are not necessarily going to shine, because they have unhedged equities, and returns aren't the "shoot the lights out" kind of returns. They are the "protect well" type of returns. There is never a sweet spot for something like this in your portfolio. Alternatively, private equity has a really robust cycle. There is 1) an investment cycle, 2) a waiting period while they are growing and 3) a harvesting period. This is not the time when he would necessarily be jumping onto this. You want to get into these when we have had a pretty tough cycle.

COMMENT
Clorox Company (CLX-N)

This is in the Consumer Products/Consumer Staples category, which he is more negative on. However, this has done better than the group. They recently produced a decent earnings number. Prefers other areas.

SELL
CVS Health Corp (CVS-N)

There is a lot happening. You have everything from an Amazon factor with the PBM's, to the challenging brick-and-mortar at the front. He’s stayed away from staples category this fall. It hasn't worked technically. There’s been a number of headwinds. If you own this, consider using it as an offset to your gains.

TOP PICK
DowDuPont Inc. (DWDP-N)

The synergies out of this merger could be conservative as a $3 billion target. This is not a simple story. These are 2 dominant companies that are being pieced together, which makes a lot of sense. You have synergies, base metals have performed well and chemical names will benefit from strong industrial growth. Dividend yield of 2.2%. (Analysts' price target is $80.00.)

TOP PICK
ETrade Financial Corp. (ETFC-Q)

He likes the market. There are no recession risks on the horizon. Expects the Fed is going to be prudent and cautious. He knows we are going to have stable to higher rates with the Fed. This is all good for something like an E*TRADE. Feels they have a lot of structural tailwinds going for them now. They've cleaned up the portfolio and have nice interest rate sensitivity. The group as a whole makes a lot of sense. (Analysts' price target is $49.00.)

COMMENT
Freeport McMoran Copper & Gold (FCX-N)

Although they are in a number of minerals, this trades closer to copper, and copper has done really well. The stock is going to be volatile, as there are going to be hits and misses on earnings. It is underpinned right now by some pretty decent fundamentals on the commodity side. There are a number of secular drivers that he suspects will be behind this. Hasn't seen anything that indicates you need to be overly cautious.

DON'T BUY
General Electric (GE-N)

Looking at the relative performance of the industrial sector, it has really struggled to break out. However, underneath the surface, machinery has been unbelievably strong, aerospace and defence has been incredibly strong, electric components has recently broken out. What held the sector back are the conglomerates, which includes General Electric. They had a very sloppy quarter and not all questions were addressed. This is definitely not the time you would buy this.

COMMENT
JetBlue Airways Corp. (JBLU-Q)

Aerospace has had some pretty tough volatile times lately. A bunch of industry metrics are pretty toppy. This company has found a way to squeeze out operational efficiencies. Their revenue generation and cost efficiencies have really improved. It has had a tough year with only mid-to single low digit EPS growth, so there is not a lot to pin your hopes on. He would look at other defense areas or an ETF.

COMMENT
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ-N)

A well diversified bucket in healthcare names. It's well run and pays a reasonable dividend, which they grow regularly. They have appropriate free cash flow to balance things out. What he really likes is that it is a diversified portfolio in healthcare. A good pick here.

COMMENT
Coca-Cola Company (KO-N)

Has gone through a number of iterations where it has been a beverage company, the bottlers are in and then out and then in again, and then into snack foods. Rather than the Coke side of things, you might be better with the Monster Beverage (MNST-Q) side. In a sense, you are leveraging the purchasing power of the Coca-Cola papers, because they are going to buy out Monster.

COMMENT
Merck & Company (MRK-N)

Unfortunately, pharmas/biotech have had a bit of a rough go. It was the mega-caps, not the small guys. This one reason he likes using ETF's in his mix. He prefers using the Spider S&P Biotech ETF (XBI-N).

COMMENT
Nvidia Corp (NVDA-Q)

A pretty toppy time for this stock. Technically it looks fine, and fundamentals underpin it. If you can get into this now and want to play it as a trend, be very, very careful. The company looks like it is still putting up 15%-20% growth numbers. As long as they are doing that, you are going to have an elevated PE and a somewhat justifiable valuation. When these things break, it is going to be pretty violent.
