Quarterhill Inc (QTRH-T) is currently experiencing challenges as reflected in the reviews from various experts. One expert notes that while the company has better sales momentum, its revenue remains inconsistent and it has historically been a chronic under-performer. The firm's pivot from technology patents to transportation sensors was initially viewed positively but has not yielded the desired results, leading to concerns about the effectiveness of this strategic shift. Despite these challenges, one expert highlights the value of the debentures, which carry a 6% interest coupon, indicating a cautious approach to investment in the company. Ultimately, there is an expectation of a potential recovery, but for now, the preference appears to be to redeem the debentures upon maturity rather than invest in the shares directly.

Made a lot of money on this name. But it under $1 over a year ago and sold most of its over $5. It was a great story, but with recent legislation changes in the US with respect to patents, it would not be possible for them to make suits against other companies as easily. Has a great portfolio of patents and should be able to get some licensing from them but they no longer have the power.
COMMENT
Not his favourite stock right now because of the way the market is going. Have filed a lawsuit against 22 companies for patent infringement. Now you have the uncertainty of how long it is going to take and how much it is going to cost them. On the positive side, they keep signing deals with other companies. Thinks the worst is over. Still likes their technology.
DON'T BUY
2 names operate in the intellectual property world that investors like to talk about. Mosaid (MSD-T) and Wi-Lan (WIN-T). The future is hard to predict. Recently announced they are going to be announcing lawsuits. Extremely long-term you could probably do well.
WEAK BUY
He has a small position in this stock. He thinks it is okay but wouldn't have a huge chunk in it. He likes it but doesn't love it. It is a good company and they like the management, but the stock is volatile.
WATCH
If you own this stock don't let it go below $2.50 on a weekly basis. Watch the volume.
HOLD
He likes the management team, but the stock has been disappointing. They need to win patent cases in order to make money. Stock just went up a dollar , believes it will go up after each contract that they win.
HOLD
Doesn't know the fundamentals, but it looks like it is trying to build a bit of a base.
TRADE
Getting frustrated with stock performance. If they go 3-4 months without signing contract, get out. Like the management team, got a dollar/share in cash. Not comfortable with my position in stock.
BUY
Had an early bird licensing program which ended at the end of July. The didn't sign any big names, so the market went down. He's sure it's a matter of time before a company signs, or they sue a company for patent infringement. He's been buying all the way down, from a valuation point of view, you have to have more then a one year view. The cash is there, so it's not a company that needs to raise money to execute their business plan.
BUY
Getting companies to pay up for use of their patents. Failed to announce a major deal by the end of July, which they said they would do. Earnings estimates for the next 2 years are in the neighbourhood of $.45-$.50. Very cheap.
BUY
Licenses patent portfolio related to Wymax. Got a deal earlier in the year with Nokia for $50 million and have put a ton of companies on notice to pay up by the end of July or else. Ranks on the border of 25% of his database.
TOP PICK
Have some great wireless patents that they are starting to collect royalties on. They have about 160 companies under notice for violating their patent. Offered an early bird program that expires at the end of July. In August, they will slap a major lawsuit on a violator, which will get very interesting.
HOLD
Have had a few problems recently in terms of reporting contracts. Likes the space. Over the longer time frame, you should be rewarded. Will be a little bit lumpy in terms of contracts. Someone volatile.
BUY
Signed a deal with Nokia (NOK-N). Acquiring Tri-Vision (TVL-T) and their patented V chip to control TV content, etc. Also have a lot of wireless patents.
BUY
Under flat-top markets (no recession) over the next 12 months it could do extremely well.
