BUY
Canadian Oil Sands (COS.UN-T) or Crescent Point (CPG-T)? Prefers Crescent Point as it has a slightly higher yield and has far more growth potential. 7.25% yield. (See Top Picks.)
TOP PICK
Strongest management team in the oil patch. Sitting on top of 2 of the biggest pools, the lower Shawnason (?) and the Bakken, probably 4 billion barrels each. Have done a brilliant job of drilling and getting their costs down. At about 56,000 barrels a day now and when they get it to 100,000 plus, probably a major will take them out.
TOP PICK
Very well managed. Into the Bakken fields, an area that is really opening up because of the new technology, multiple frac and good quality oil.
HOLD
Has gained a dominant position in the late oil in the Bakkens. Fully valued. Would like to see it grow into its valuation by proving out its assets that it acquired. Competent in management's ability.
DON'T BUY
Excellent company and is in the most profitable play in Western Canada, PetroBakken. Produces light oil. Has gotten very expensive and there are other producers with better value. Recently reduced his position.
TOP PICK
The premier light oil company in Canada. US Dept of Geology has stated the Bakken is probably 25 times bigger than expected.
COMMENT
Great success story. Reasonable companies that stray from the core business and start buying shares of other companies. This one will thrive almost directly from the price of oil. Good quality light oil.
BUY
(Market Call Minute.) Worth $50 on an NAV.
BUY
A core holding of his. Maintained distribution when converted to corporation. Both income and growth vehicle. Have the best land position.
COMMENT
PetroBakken (PBN-T) or Crescent Point (CPG-T)? This one has an 8 to 10 inventory of drilling plays. Likes the Bakkens and both of these companies but in the short term prefers PetroBakken, which has a better value.
COMMENT
Excellent oil/gas, mostly oil company that converted from a trust and kept its payout at a high level. Made some very good acquisitions especially in the Bakken area.
DON'T BUY
Low-cost energy producer and extremely good at what they do. Expensive to him, given on his outlook on the price of oil. There are others that should do better.
BUY
Was an income trust but 7% yield has been maintained. Extremely active in acquiring Saskatchewan land and developing the Bakken plays. New drilling techniques are helping and he can see quite a good growth. Right now stock seems to be caught in the $39-$40 range and may rest here for a while. Will move higher on a long-term basis.
BUY
Great company with good solid growth production prospects. Undervalued.
BUY
Story just keeps on getting better – a high-grade oil play in Saskatchewan. They find promising land, drill it to get the potential and then scoop up all the land they can get. They are building up potential drilling locations. Distributions are safe.
