Manufacturer of solar cells, particularly in Germany. Their big challenge is that the German market is over 40% of the global installed base for solar. Governments around the world are cutting back on solar subsidies.

COMMENT

Have a solar manufacturing plant in Germany and expanding into an installation location in Ontario where government has indicated a strong incentive to install solar residentially and commercially. Emerging growth story but not in his database.

DON'T BUY

Has always liked management but it has been a serial disappointer. Had to do a massive dilution in the share count earlier this year. Will also be beholden to subsidies for green energy (solar energy) in Germany.

A play on the solar industry. Solar is interesting but it's a bit pricey and he is not playing this area today.

Silicon production and solar devices. Doesn't see it inherently benefiting from Ontario's green technology. Had some technical difficulties.

Solar is in a bit of an eclipse. Across the board in the solar sector there are capacity cuts and supply cuts and companies are downgrading guidance. Solar will be massively in overcapacity in 2009 based on fundamentals. This company has some new interesting technology but it is not ready yet. A wildcard is what governments do.

Whole solar sector ran up on a view that solar was going to come into a much bigger part of the energy mix. It will take some time and will require incredible patience.

Have 3 parts. 1) Manufacturing facility in Germany that is largely subsidized by the government. 2) Installation of devices on roofs to capture power. Payback is roughly 15-20 years. 3) Growing silicon for semiconductors. Better companies available.

There have been some delays, which is one of the reasons the stock has not performed well. This is not one of his favourites. They need to execute better.

If you like the solar space, some of the companies that you could consider are First Solar (FSLR-Q), a rise technology (APV-T) and Canadian Solar (CSIQ-Q).

PAST TOP PICK

(A Top Pick Nov 22/07. Up 1.7%.) Short term he is neutral on this one, but long-term the stock could double. Just announced an increase in their stock capacity from 350 MW to 560 MW. Also going to start construction on a 10,000 metric ton polysilicon plant, which he feels is a “sky in the pie” plan. Near term will need quite a bit of money which will hold the stock in.

Timminco (TIM-T) and Arise Technologies (APV-T) are 2 radically different companies. This one is both a manufacturer and a potential producer of silicon. New plant should come on in May for production of solar cells. Is their proprietary methodology going to allow them to produce silicon for their own production as well as other people at a good price when there are concerns that 2 years down the road there may be price pressures.

A play in the solar space. Solar is expected to grow by 40% over the next 5 years. Building out new production facilities in Germany. Prefers others.

BUY

A solar company. Very interesting technology. If they can execute on everything they are doing, it could be a good winner. Solar is a good space to be in.
