Lucent Technologies (LU)

DON'T BUY
Fundamentals have to be corrected.
DON'T BUY
They don't have accounting scandals and have been profitable, but looking forward, they don't have the same competitive edge that Nortel does.
BUY
If you are going to be in this space, Nortel would be better. Their technology is not as good as Nortel or Erickson.
DON'T BUY
Have had three quarters profits in a role. Would prefer more niche oriented focused telecom equipment companies or Cisco or Nortel once because clear.
DON'T BUY
Lucent (and Nortel) looks as though there end market is recovering. Would look for a continued pullback before going into them. There could be some risks on the technology side. The
DON'T BUY
Coming out of the worst of the downtrend and the increase in telecom spending we are saying some right sizing. Prefers Nortel from a product and market perspective.
DON'T BUY
In a very competitive business. Very speculative.
SELL
Nortel taking market share. Sell this and buy Nortel when it dips if you like this sector.
DON'T BUY
Networkers have had a big rally. As weaker product offerings in the IP area compared to Nortel. There is some risk in this area.
DON'T BUY
Still have ongoing balance sheet issues. The whole sector has had a tremendous move in the last month and valuations are stretched. If buying in this section, would prefer Nortel.
WAIT
Going up on comments that Telcom's will be spending again. A very highly levered company. Wait for news.
BUY
The cheapest of the major telecom equipment manufacturers. Expects some upside in 2004. Prefers Nortel.
DON'T BUY
Has gone through some tough sledding. When it recovers, it can do so quickly and can go up to much higher multiples because of institutional buying. Has good technology. Has a lot of debt. Major risk.
DON'T BUY
The industry is starting to slowly turn. Has a lot of competition. Would prefer a Nortel, Cisco or Ericcson..
DON'T BUY
Has always been behind the curve in fixing its cost structure. Nortel is strong competition for the baby Bell contracts.
