Stockchase Opinions

Shane Obata Philip Morris International PM-N BUY ON WEAKNESS Sep 06, 2024

Stock performance has performed very well. Tobacco products continue to earn strong profits. Does not own shares. Would recommend buying on weakness. Concern is that products won't be used for the long term, but in the short term - business is strong.

Average down? Normally this space is a very strong cash flow generator. Personally, she does not invest in stocks that have been proven to be detrimental to people's health. She would sell and put the money into a sector that has better growth opportunities. (Analysts’ price target is $97.00)
HOLD
There is much controversary around their vaping business. Smoking used to be on the rise in the developing world, but that may be plateauing as well. The dividend is likely safe. You won't make a 10% return per year, but a good holding.
DON'T BUY
Cash cow, but how much growth is there? What are its long-term opportunities? Tobacco side of the business is in decline. Vaping, the saviour, now under pressure. Don't be baited by the high dividend. Not a good result if you get the dividend, but stock price declines.
DON'T BUY
Tobacco companies have been up and down and sideways. He's not comfortable with this space. Not expensive, but not exciting. On a technical basis, meandering sideways.
COMMENT
Hit in last couple of days. 7% yield, growing at 9% a year. Headwinds from an ESG perspective. Very inexpensive at 11x earnings. Steady performer as far as total returns. Have to ask yourself if, over time, institutions are less likely to own it.
DON'T BUY
A very good company, but he doesn't recommend tobacco stocks.
DON'T BUY
Hard to analyze, because they don't have any balance sheets (which sounds weird). For example PM, with its 5.5% yield, has negative shareholder equity of 10B. If something were to happen to this company, there's no balance sheet to help you. It's a high wire act. These stocks are too risky for him. Try to avoid.
DON'T BUY

He never recommend nor will tobacco stocks.

DON'T BUY

Is 26% this year, because it's a consistent tobacco play in an uncertain environment. He doesn't invest in tobacco for ethical reasons, and this industry looks bleak.
