PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick June 19/09. Up 25.5%.) Still likes the agriculture sector a lot. This one has exposure to fertilizer, seeds and equipment. There will be a greater and greater demand for food so this is an area that should continue to do well.
BUY
US$ ETFs have added currency risk. If you are not worried about the currency, this is a good way to play agriculture.
WEAK BUY
Market Vectors Agribusinesses E.T.F. A basket of companies in the agricultural sector. Recently scaled back because of Monsanto's announcement of layoffs and concerns on future earnings guidance. Would own a small position of .5% to 1% exposure.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick June 19/08. Up 15.2%.) Agricultural ETF. Still like this. Global population is growing by 75 million every year. Developing countries are changing their food habits to more protein.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick June 19/09. Up 8.17%.) Agriculture ETF. Longer term, demand will continue to increase for agricultural businesses. Likes this one long-term.
TOP PICK
Agriculture ETF. Has just moved down to the 200 day moving average and he expects a bit of a bounce from here. This ETF gives you access to all the great agricultural names.
COMMENT
Has been selling his holdings and switching to Claymore Global Agriculture (COW-T). Same product but in Canadian dollars. Long-term, he thinks the agricultural patch is the best area to be in. Hardly any debt in this industry and there are great earnings.
BUY
Still likes agricultural. If you own either PowerShare DB Agriculture E.T.F. (DBA-A) or Market Vectors Agribusinesses E.T.F. (MOO-A), consider averaging down. Not a bad entry level. Long-term investments. Prefers the DBA.
TRADE
Agriculture ETFs: Canada is a small market and slicing and dicing ETFs this small doesn’t make sense. There is concentrated risk.
BUY
Likes agriculture. Low management fees.
BUY
There is a strong demand for commodities right now and a long-term secular movement into commodities. The run that we have seen is not anywhere close to what the prices over the next 5 years will be.
DON'T BUY
In the agriculture sector he prefers either iPath DJ-AIG Agricultural Index (JJA-N) or iPath DJ-AIG Grains Index (JJG-N) because they are broader based.
DON'T BUY
Fairly thin. For agriculture, use iPath DJ-AIG (JJA-N), which gives you a basket of agricultural commodities sponsored by Barclays. (Also see his Top Picks.)
