AU vs. IMG

Neither is in the lowest-cost quartile in the space. IMG is the most-improved gold story in Canada. He is a gold bull, but neither would be in his Top 20.

PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Jun 04/25, Up 80%)

(Note the short timeframe.) Inflection point in 2026, where FCF will be a wall of cash. Will be one of the top 5 mines in Canada once it hits full operation. Still a takeover candidate.

TOP PICK

Consistent theme across his Top Picks will be companies that are going to rerate, due to new projects or a shift in business.

This one has benefited from strong gold prices, but real upside will come from the Cote gold mine around Sudbury. It will start to operate at full speed by end of 2025, meaning material growth in production. Budget doubled, but all sins are forgiven because so has the price of gold since the mine opened. They'll be able to de-leverage, resulting in significant FCF in 2026 and 2027 for either buybacks or distributions.

Key will be what happens after 2028, because their West Africa mine ends. No dividend.

(Analysts’ price target is $13.07)
COMMENT

The question was on Iamgold and Teck Resources. IMG has declared some good news from its Quebec mine and Teck has more copper production with gold as an add-on. However both operate in some places that are less politically agreeable. He likes the gold sector but prefers bigger and more diversified companies in more stable countries including the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Chile. Following along this theme he owns both Kinross and Agnico Eagle.

SELL

Great rocks. Lousy balance sheet, which needs to be fixed with refinancing and can get ugly for existing shareholders. For most investors, he'd sell and take the tax loss. Then re-buy in 31 days depending on outcome of refinancing. New CEO is an expert in troubled companies.

BUY ON WEAKNESS

Don't argue with an uptrend. Pulling back to the trendline. You can see that it was parabolic. Will probably take a pause, but moving in the right direction along with gold. Long-term investors will be fine.

COMMENT
Gold.

Whole sector's been a pretty good place to be. If you're looking for real strength as far as opportunity goes, move downstream from the big names to mid-tier names like IMG. Those are the ones that are behaving quite robustly.

Often it works to buy a basket, and then drill down and add one name for some extra alpha.

DON'T BUY
A takeover rumour? It's always been a high beta to gold name. IMG needs to be consistent; there's always a fire to put out. Yes, he's heard rumours of a Chinese takeover, but just a rumour. He avoids IMG, not liking the high beta.
COMMENT
Been sideways, nothing happening. Gold should rally during the coming market pullback.
TOP PICK
Good upside and balance sheet. He likes the golds. Trades at a good 40% discount to book. One of its mines is in Burkino Faso, a troubled country, so that is the lone caveat. (Analysts’ price target is $6.21)
HOLD
Takeover target? Maybe, but don't buy it for this reason. This is a hold. IMG hasn't executed as well as it should. For context, we are early in the gold wave (moving upward).
DON'T BUY
He sold them. It has a high-beta to gold, but operational issues were offsetting the opportunity. They are trying to sell assets in West Africa. The could become a take-out target -- possibly by China buyers. A risky reason to keep holding it.
COMMENT
Why is there no interest in the gold space? The company has done a great job restructuring. They had recently hinted the company was going to up for sale, but no one showed up. The company is cash flow positive at this level. He is into gold because he likes the asset class. He worries that IMG-T is not very good at increasing production. He has exposure in gold, because global interest rates are near or below zero. When the gold market decides to move, it will go quickly. Companies in this space have to prove to investors they are making money.
BUY
He is looking at it and he has it as a buy. It has good management. They have been lagging the other producers and this is why he is looking at it. He has a target of $8.50. He has to sell something in his portfolio before he can purchase IMG.
