Stockchase Opinions

John Embry New Gold Inc. NGD-T BUY Aug 28, 2008

Good merger with Peak Gold and Metallica. Pretty good package of assets. This will be one of the “go to” stocks as we go forward in the cycle. Has been a victim of forced sales, nothing to do with the underlying fundamentals of the company. Tremendous buying opportunity.

COMMENT

The knock against this is the climbing costs of their Rainy River mine that they would like to get into production. He prefers companies that have very robust projects to start with. Things like this one were not robust to start with, even before they acquired it. He is not interested in this.

SELL

Chart shows a bunch of lower highs. The group of sellers are accepting lower and lower prices and are willing to sell. The buyers are sticking to a certain price (about $3.75 or $4) and are not willing to step up. Sellers are getting more aggressive and buyers are not. If he owned, he would be selling.

DON'T BUY
Guidance maintained, but concerns about mixed results. Would tend to stay away or switch out to something else. But if you’ve owned it for a while, looks like it might come around and have quite a bit of leverage.
WATCH
A company that has struggled with large mines that take so long to get going. Rainy River has been their Achilles heel. They put out a good update, but one quarter does not make the mine. He wants to see several quarters of success. Patience is needed, but there is still significant risk for this project.
WATCH
They are reworking a high-cost mine in Ontario. Gold prices have helped the share price lately. He is watching, but wonders if it will return to $9. He would wait to get more clarity on the risks involved.
BUY
We're in seasonality for gold, peaking in late-September, then from Dec. 23-March 22. NGD has doubled in a short period of time. NGD has seen a recent big move, doubling, but this month it is flagging, consolidating, then afterwards should explode higher. But this is very volatile. The trend is higher. Buy on support.
COMMENT
Doesn't think there will be a take-over soon. The CEO used to be the CEO of Richmond Mines. They now have an operator. On their watch list and he has confidence in management.
DON'T BUY

Operational risks with its smaller operation.

Trevor Rose’s Insights - Trevor’s most-liked answers from 5i Research.

NGD has had a nice run recently alongside the price of gold, and while its fundamentals are fairly strong we might expect a slight pullback here as it has run up ~65% in the past month.
Debt levels are OK, its free cash flow can be lumpy, but it has a strong cash balance of $236.4M and an equity position of $959.5M.
It is expected to report earnings in a couple of weeks and we would prefer to wait until earnings have been released and reassess the company's prospects at that time before jumping in.

Collection of Tier 2 assets. Never been fond of Ontario assets. He likes higher quality. Could do very well with a rising price for gold, which tends to favour the marginal over the lower-cost producer.
