PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Jun 15/05. Up 15%.) One of the senior juniors. Still likes it. Would buy more when the market moves a little lower.
DON'T BUY
Some earnings have come through and on a technical basis it was looking a lot better. There might be some real resistance around $4. Doesn't consider it an investment stock. Doesn't buy it, but continually inherits it as new portfolios come in. Would sell at $4. Not sure that they will avoid litigation related to past events.
BUY
A heavy oil project. They have a concession. Have some good partners. Had a checkered past, but recently things have looked better. An "over the horizon" kind of investment. Has come off and is in a buying range. For a patient investor, you could buy a little bit at these levels and when it comes down, buy a little more, but be willing to sit 3/4 years.
BUY ON WEAKNESS
Has some very good properties. The cash flow in the latter part of '05 and into '06 looks very good. Got a little ahead of itself in terms of the multiples and it looks like there is some profit happening now. Look at buying in the $33/34 range. Looks a little expensive compared to its peers.
BUY
Very positive on the pipelines. Have moved up in price, so not cheap, but still have a pretty good dividend. Can see the energy sector growing in Canada substantially, so the pipelines are going to be the ones expanding. Good long term investment.
DON'T BUY
Has run into a little bit of a rough spot here because of derailments. Being looked at fairly closely by the regulators to see that their equipment and rails are being kept up to date. Have had extremely good earnings. Prefers CP (CP-T).
BUY
Just came out with a new issue. Thinks there were more than a few riders in that issue and as the pressure came on the oil stocks and oil/gas income trusts, a few of those people have been bailing. Not his most favourite income trust, but it is a very large and acceptable income trust.
WEAK BUY
A very good drilling company. If you are into income trusts as an income producer, this one doesn't really qualify. He owns it as a drilling company, not an income trust.
SELL
Not a favourite. Had a good run up. Seems to have sorted out some of their problems. There are still some huge uncertainties regarding the airplane part of their business. Getting contracts in the rails which is low margin. Will be dead money for awhile.
DON'T BUY
Has not been a favourite as he is buying income trusts for the income and this one doesn't pay out enough. Has long lived assets, but you will have to wait a long time to get your income out of them.
TOP PICK
Looking back when it was an independent oil company and compare its price action with its peers, it has been pretty pedestrian, yet it's still the same company. Has 4 million acres of undrilled land. Relatively low payout ratio. Has lots of potential.
BUY
Banking sector would be his favourite for the long term. The historical 10 year return for the banking sector was 13%. Would love the entry point to be a little lower, but not a long term place to be.
BUY
Banking sector would be his favourite for the long term. The historical 10 year return for the banking sector was 13%. Would love the entry point to be a little lower, but not a long term place to be.
WEAK BUY
Banking sector would be his favourite for the long term. The historical 10 year return for the banking sector was 13%. Would love the entry point to be a little lower, but not a long term place to be. This one is presently at a sale price, but you might have to wait for a while.
TOP PICK
Banking sector would be his favourite for the long term. The historical 10 year return for the banking sector was 13%. This one for the short term opportunity. Hasn't settled with Enron, but almost settled with the range. That uncertainty has taken the stock down unfairly.
