Stockchase Opinions

Jon Vialoux Westport Fuel Systems Inc WPRT-T BUY ON WEAKNESS Sep 29, 2017

This looks quite good. There was a breakout recently. It was basically resisting at the 200-day moving average for a long time. Come March, it broke out quite aggressively. It moved above its 200-day and 50-day moving averages and is now up to multi-month highs. You want to buy this closer to some of those major moving averages. The 50-day is at $2.34, so it is a bit frothy here. He wouldn’t be entering right now, but would look for a pullback.

TOP PICK

Clean burning heavy engines. They were a market darling 10 years ago. We are now actually seeing the progression to cleaner fuels such as natural gas. They have a joint venture with Cummins. They also have components. They have sold off non-core businesses. (Analysts’ target: $3.00).

COMMENT

He continues to like this. Expects you will continue to see them garner more and more market share as they go along. They’ve announced they are going to be EBITDA positive in 2018, the 1st time in history. Expects to see the stock continue to appreciate with more interest.

TOP PICK

This continues to be a huge growth area in the liquid natural gas and liquid propane markets for bigger users. The company has said they are going to be profitable starting in 2018. (Analysts’ price target is $3.00.)

DON'T BUY

He has a bias against this company because for over the past two decades all they have done is issue new shares and lose money. Until they turn a profit it will continue to be a “show me” story.

PAST TOP PICK

(A Top Pick Jun 22/17, Down 32%) They have an interesting business. After their merger, they are continuing to grow the two companies. He thinks this one is going to do well. He is looking at buying it again.

DON'T BUY

A smaller company that has entered into a wide consolidation range. The volume is not as high as he would like. It is encouraging to see the successful test at $2.70. He would use this as the exit point. There is no strong trend – he would pass.

WEAK BUY

Have to be careful with tech companies in this space. Something becomes a darling, and the market thinks everything will move in this direction. Doesn’t see this happening. Doesn’t want to bet on one technology here. Natural gas is seen as a bridge fuel. But with energy moving in a greener direction, what will happen to natural gas? Be a little bit cautious. Likes them, but they’re not going to transform the system. Nice medium term solution until we move to full electric.

WATCH
They were rallying last week after boosting their forecast. We have resistance just under $5. We are almost at the 200 week moving average. Wait until it punches through $5. It has been going up against the S&P since March.
DON'T BUY
We've reached the tipping point where we're sick of really dirty oil. But don't get greedy with this now. Can't recommend buying it at current levels after such a big run.
