Sold its Canadian operations recently, so it has the cash from that. Life insurance is the most boring business, but if you do it successfully it works out okay. The major thing for life insurance companies is where long-term interest rates go. A conservatively run, very sound European-based life insurance company.

Had a fairly hard time over the last little while. Does not think there is too much downside here.

It’s a good insurance company, but it is much more of a domestic UK focused story. Solvency 2 is the insurance regulation that is going to be introduced in the next few years, so insurance companies are building assets to build their balance sheets, which will slow the growth. He would prefer Prudential (PUK-N) as a better alternative.

COMMENT

(London Exchange) Insurance industry is interesting because of the long period of low rates, which he expects will be with us for some time. Very difficult for insurers to grow their asset base in excess of their liability base. In the long term insurance industry will come back.

COMMENT

(London exchange.) Doesn't have the same challenges that ManuLife (MFC-T) has. Not his favourite in the insurance space and there are better alternatives such as Power Financial (PWF-T) and Great West (GWO-T). Wouldn't have a huge issue with this one. (See Top Picks.)

DON'T BUY

Not a big lover of life insurance companies. There are better ways to play the financial service sector. Would prefer Morgan Stanley. Not enough growth for him to get excited.

PARTIAL BUY

(London Stock Exchange)British diversified insurer with global operations. Long-term outlook is good. Well-run company and is benefiting from the strong demographic push. His concern is that UK insurance companies have got a bit ahead of themselves in valuation. Phase in your purchases.
