Michael Smedley HBP Global Gold Bear+ E.T.F. HGD-T COMMENT Nov 27, 2007

In general, gold is looking very positive and the gold mining companies are looking very interesting these days. Would not short gold. You could use this as a tool to try and make a $1 on the negative side. (He didn't sound positive on this.)

If you like gold... Getting 2 times leverage as gold price decreases. Gold is a play on the U.S dollar. Makes money if the price of gold stock goes down.
COMMENT
Why are HGD and HDU down together. Every once in a while you do get anomalies and that may be why they are both down together.
DON'T BUY
Pair trade of Global Gold Bear+ ETF and Global Gold Bull+ ETF? These are double ETFs so that if gold moves $1 you will see a $2 move. He does not like using double or triple ETFs. Very simple arithmetic will show that the price of the commodity can stay flat but, as a result of how they run these ETFs, you lose money over time even though the commodity space flat.
WAIT

You have to be relatively short term focused. Thinks gold has more upside in the long term but next year it will have a tough time. On the down side, if we stay below $1200, a lot of gold production gets shut in. Thinks there is a floor between $1100 and $1200. We need inflation to be the next catalyst to get gold going. It’s range bound next year and he doesn’t think you should be aggressively trading it.

COMMENT

Where you talk about a bear or bull ETF that is levered, they have no future. You are supposed to trade them on a day to day basis or possible a weekly basis. They are guaranteed to lose over the long term because of the way the gains are translated over night. These are a very short term tactic.
