BUY

This has done extremely well on the price side, but its valuations have become less and less expensive, which means the fundamentals are growing at a faster pace than the price. Last quarter, they reported a year-over-year revenue growth of 24%.

BUY

This has done extremely well. They expanded their portfolio of big equipment at the cusp of an infrastructure spend. The one thing he would caution on is that they are a fairly high beta stock, so you are going to see a fair bit of volatility. Also has a fairly levered balance sheet.

Sell Halliburton (HAL-N) and buy Schlumberger (SLB-N) to avoid the superficial tax loss? This is one way of doing it. The rule is that you can't buy back the same security within 30 days. He prefers Halliburton.

TOP PICK

Has over 1 billion installed devices, and a 93% loyalty rate. They have a lot of foreign cash, $51 per share. 30% of the total market share is in cash. Trades at about 15X earnings, but if you take the cash into account, it is about 12X. Dividend yield of 1.4%. (Analysts' price target is $193.)

TOP PICK

Bought this as a money centred bank and thinks it is an excellent opportunity from a valuation standpoint. It’s going into a more mature valuation similar to the other banks. Dividend yield of 1.7%. (Analysts' price target is $78.50.)

TOP PICK

This is basically a play on the markets we are in, and the activity. They have an asset management group with about $10 billion under management. It is growing well and will make about $6.50-$7 next year. Not expensive. A good way to be involved in a growing market. Dividend yield of 1.5%. (Analysts' price target is $78.)

COMMENT

Bread price-fixing He can’t believe this happened in Canada with a major supermarket. Loblaw will be offering $25 gift cards to consumers and book a hit of $75M-$150M which isn’t a big amount considering the size of the company. He doesn’t think it will have any dramatic impact.

COMMENT

We have seen a pick up in this sector overall. We are in the seasonal period for metals and mining and started to see a run up. Looking at the charts, we’ve had a little bit of a downtrend and are now having a little bit of resistance. This is actually so positive. Especially above 32$, it would be a very positive sign for it to move higher.

COMMENT

Do you see a double bottom? A double bottom is a very positive signal. We aren’t in high season for oil. We have seen a little bit of a pick up in the last few days for oil stocks. In January oil doesn’t do so well so in his perspective it's better to hold off a little bit. We don’t have a double bottom here, we can’t call that a double bottom until you actually reach the $38 point and have a breakthrough. Once it breaks through $38 that would be extremely positive from a technical picture.

COMMENT

Forest products and home builders have done quite well over the last little bit. We are in the seasonal period for forest products and home building until the beginning of February. Charts looks positive. There is no resistance, the next level of resistance is around $20 or so. This is more of a momentum play at this point. From a seasonal perspective, he would look at getting out in early February unless it falls apart in between. Right now, we have strong technical profile, rising and no resistance, and also we’re in the seasonal period for it.

COMMENT

Canadian banks are a core part of anyone’s portfolio. Lots of positive stuff about them. CIBC was one of the two banks who beat expectation in last earnings. We see Canadian banks outperform from August after Q3 earnings and have to see strong earnings in Q4; otherwise they tend to underperform. Seeing some softness in the general banks. Sold their Canadian financial sector positions at the end of November. Looking to get back in the sector late January. On the technical basis, breaking above $125 or so would be positive technically. Right now, banks can still move up. It’s not that they aren’t positive at this time of the year, but it’s just that they tend to underperform the TSX Composite at the moment.

BUY

Great company. Last quarter they had earnings growth of 24%. They are doing all the right things. From a seasonal perspective, Technology are strong from October until January. We’re in a solid pattern here, no resistance up above, this is positive. It’s seasonally strong and technically hasn’t broken down. This is good to go right now.

WATCH

Follows the overall pattern of silver. From a seasonal perspective, silver has a seasonal period from January 1st until March 31st. If we look over the last couple of years we saw a correction in 2015 and 2016 and saw a strong run at the beginning of 2017. We saw the same thing last year. This is a great setup. He likes to see a sector or stock like this pushed down before seasoning period, and then to start to go up and show some signs of strength. This is very favorable. Currently doesn’t look good at all, down to support level where we were last year at this time. But from a seasonal perspective, just enter into it on the slightest sign of strength, you don’t have to wait for a breakout. It’s set up well for the beginning of the seasonal period. Watch for a little bit more strength and then it’s good to go.

COMMENT

Has done extremely well. They benefited from a number of different things, including rising rates in the states, but they are also well exposed heavily; more so that the other banks, to international markets, approximately 45% of their earnings. That’s good and bad. Last year in 2017 it actually outperformed at lot of the other banks. Seasonal periods for banks last until April. It’s performing well. From a fundamental perspective, though, US dollars tends to pick up in January. If we see stronger US dollars in January and February, you might see this bank underperform against the other banks because of its emerging markets exposure. Citigroup is fine. Just watch it and the US dollar as well.
