BUY

Has never been a fan of the food industry. However, if you want a relatively safe stock and a company that is doing reasonably well right now, this is a good place to put your money.

COMMENT

In the process of moving into Agrium (AGU-T). He was always relatively negative this company, but always very positive on Agrium. With the combination of the 2, you will end up owning both, which is okay. If this sold off, he would be stepping back in. It’s a good, long term growth sector.

DON'T BUY

Had owned this in the past, and what caught him totally by surprise was the tremendous increase in the price of coal, which he felt was a potential drag. Right now, the stock has pretty well taken in the improved prospects and is fully priced.

COMMENT

A company in total transition. Management has been doing a pretty good job. They have taken their manufacturing area and moved it to China, which have created some new phones which appear to be attractive. BlackBerry is going to focus on the background stuff. They’ve always had a good reputation for safety and protecting info. Becoming a software company rather than a manufacturer, and maybe that is the best place to make your money.

DON'T BUY

This is well down from where it was in the past. A company that basically invests contracts to get the metal at a fixed cheap price. This is being challenged by some of the local governments, particularly in Central America. It is an ongoing problem. Right now, he is neutral on precious metals. If he were to see the silver price take off, he would become a little more positive. Right now, he would wait on the sidelines.

COMMENT

Has held this in the past. It has a reasonable dividend, and looks like it is kind of consolidating, and this could go on for a bit. Until we see things a little clearer for the future, he is sitting on the sidelines.

COMMENT

He likes the pipelines as there is always going to be a need to move petroleum products. The yield is okay, but not that exciting. But if you want a long-term, safe investment in the energy industry, this is probably not a bad place to put your money.

TOP PICK

A long-term growth stock. It sold off a month or 2 ago. With various countries contemplating major infrastructure expenditures, the company is well-placed to benefit. He likes the long-term capital appreciation potential. Dividend yield of 1.99%. (Analysts’ price target is $64.)

TOP PICK

Has been somewhat disappointing in the last couple of quarters, particularly on the US side, and an area that is likely to come alive at some point. The move in the US to reduce regulations hampering US banks, should help this bank improve US profitability. Dividend yield of 3.48%. (Analysts’ price target is $72.)

TOP PICK

If you feel the total index has a little more oomph to it, this is the place you want to put a little of your money right now. It is for those people who feel they are being left behind but can’t make up their minds as to where to put their money. It gives a lot of diversification.
