COMMENT
International distribution business. Got way overstretched and had to retract in a huge way. Looks like they have formed a base and will be survivors. Chart looks very good. If the economy doesn't come back and the softness is protracted, they are very vulnerable.
BUY
Strip retail and stand-alone retail. Numbers surprised the market. Fairly stable business. In a year or so they have a big debt that matures but they should work your way through this. 16.2% yield. (He owns some of their convertible.)
DON'T BUY
Hotels, largely up in the oil sands area. With oil hitting $70, it might pick up again. None of the hotels will stay as REITs. Very high debt. A very challenged entity. Very risky.
COMMENT
Everything about this firm is really good except that they don't earn their distributions. Doesn't expect particularly good performance. Low debt and great shopping centres with very good management. Under performed significantly in the last month or so. If the economy does not pick up they will have troubles but on the other hand they have good tenants.
COMMENT
Winner of the year on performance being up 94% year-to-date. Shopping centres across the country. Payout ratio is quite sustainable at 180%. Has struggled for a long time. Some very knowledgeable people got involved. Good management. Tough situation.
TOP PICK
(A Top Pick June 2/08. Down 22.66%.) Very good management that has been disappointed on its performance. In spite of the economy, it should be a survivor. Conservative market and conservative management. Yield of about 7.6%. Payout ratio of about 85%.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick June 2/08. Down 47.26%.)
TOP PICK
(A Top Pick June 2/08. Down 20.71%.) Had some debt problems but raise some money and recently did a stock issue. Very high yield of 11%. Conservative management.
TOP PICK
Maritime operations and are producing well. About 9% yield.
COMMENT
This is a huge bet on Calgary. Over came a bunch of problems. Conservative. Have a couple of more things to do. Good management.
TOP PICK
Africa has been a very tough place to invest and his controversial but is one of the new emerging markets. This ETF is very small with fees generally higher than most had almost 1%. These are global mega-cap companies that are all doing at least 50% of their business on the African continent. He would not have more than 5% in a portfolio.
