Wall St. makes new highs
The Dow 0.39%, the S&P 0.37% and the Nasdaq 0.34%. Notable gainers included Pfizer which jumped 4.15%, Cisco up 2.71%, chipmakers like Nvidia adding 1.92% and Under Armour soaring 16.47%.
In contrast, Tesla slipped over 3%, Citigroup slid 1.45%, Visa lost 1.56% and Activision Blizzard gave back 2.12%. Faring better were the cryptos as Bitcoin jumped nearly 4% over $63,000. However, gold lost a little ground to stay below $1,800 an ounce. The U.S. 10-year yield hovered around 1.54%. All eyes are on the U.S. Fed’s Jerome Powell’s next announcement on Wednesday.
The TSX retreated 0.36%, dragged down by energy, materials, real estate and healthcare, though consumer staples roared and financials and industrials gained. Big movers included Air Canada which soared 4.39%, Chorus Aviation also climbing 3.75%, Birchcliffe Energy at 3.28% and Canada Goose up 2.39%. Lost in the background have been the banks which have been quietly gaining lately. Royal Bank added over 1% today. Losing ground were Osisko Mining at -4.73%, Nutrien by -5% and Cargojet at -3.71%. It was a rough day for crude oil in which WTI tumbled by 0.62% and WCS lost 3.2%
