TOP PICK
He likes their interests outside of North America. Very conservatively managed. Good domestic business. 4% yield and wouldn't be surprised if this is one of the early banks to increase their dividends.
TOP PICK
Bank of Nova Scotia’s BMG Bullion Mutual Fund. The fund holds 1/3 gold, 1/3 silver and 1/3 platinum. Has been making good steady progress in its value.
TOP PICK
Have had a lot of trouble with the fibre-optic side of the business through Allstream but thinks it is still potentially a great asset. As some point they will either have success or will sell it. Nice solid yield.
HOLD
Has probably got very oversold. Still could be some problems with their equity products. Even with write-downs, the company has a good capital base. Had a good bounce recently and he thinks that will continue. 4% yield.
DON'T BUY
Been under pressure. He recently did some switching into other golds as well as Silver Wheaton (SLW-T). Also likes Goldcorp (G-T) better. If you haven't got gold, it's better to have this one than none.
HOLD
(He owns the convertible debentures.) Russians have moved in and looks like they are taking it over. Uranium prices have really done nothing.
SELL
Never been a fan of airlines. A tough way to make money. Load factors are up and things are not looking too bad and it may be okay for the next couple of years but all it would need is a pop in oil creating higher energy costs. Speculative.
HOLD
Located in the Bakkens in Saskatchewan and are very good at it. Horizontal wells and lots of land. 8 billion barrels of reserves. 7% dividend yield.
COMMENT
Gold. Has been in a 10 year bull market and has outperformed just about all other assets. The demand for gold is indicating a lot of uncertainty about global currencies, certainly the US$ because of the money being printed and their debt. This should be an insurance portion of your portfolio. He has 10%-15% in his portfolios.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Aug 7/09. Up 37.1%.)
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Aug 7/09. Down 14.78%.) New manager. Waiting for the spin-off of their Southeast Asia assets. Thinks it will do okay. Dividend looks safe.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Aug 7/09. Up 6.15%.)
COMMENT
Mrk Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX-N) Versus BMO Junior Gold Index ETF (ZJG-T)? Junior Gold is fine as it gives a little more diversification. He would like to have a look at the holdings on the GDX-N as he thinks they will be the same as in the iShares S&P/TSX Global Gold (XGD-T) and you wouldn't have to worry about currency.
TOP PICK
S&P/TSX REIT ETF (XRE-T). Good products. Equal weighted products.
BUY
iShares S&P/TSX REIT ETF (XRE$-T) or BMO Equal Weight REITs Index ETF (ZRE-T)? Both good products. iShares are always cap weighted and BMO works on a basis of equal weighted products.
