Stocks edge up, oil dips below $100
After losing 4.5% in the first quarter, the S&P began Q2 on Friday up 0.34%. The Nasdaq rose 0.29% and the Dow 0.4%. It was a choppy session on Wall Street, but stocks closed on session highs.
Credit cards rallied as Visa added 2.07%, but transports sank as FedEx fell 4.38%. The chipmakers weathered a loss as Intel slipped 2.93% and Nvidia fell 2.1%. However other tech names like Verizon added 2.32% and Comcast 1.88%. Banks saw mixed moves as Citigroup slid 2.02%. Bitcoin advanced 1.3% to $46,300 while gold held at $1,925. The U.S. 10-year lost a bit of ground at 2.37%.
The TSX fared much better in Q1, advancing 4%. It was up 0.22% on Friday, led by energy, materials and telcos though industrials sank. Big moves came from BlackBerry, sinking 9.17% on a weak forecast, Canopy Growth declining 2.53%, but CNQ climbing 1.91% and Kinross Gold jumping 3%. Peyto Exploration can Calfrac Well Services both jumped 7.1% and GoodFood delivered a 6.07% gain. In contrast, Aritizia slid 6.72% and TFI International lost 5.67%. The TSX advanced despite WTI dipping below $100 a barrel and WCS retreating to $88.
