COMMENT
CEO Stepping Down. About a year and a half ago he focused on a private placement from the company that traded at a premium -- something that was normally unheard of. This created a red-flag to him about the company, Today's disappointing news from the short sellers need to be rebuked, but he is not sure they will be able to.
COMMENT
Market Outlook He is 75% cash right now. He is glad the market is rebounding, but he does not really buy into it. He sees the economy slowing down still and black clouds are still forming. He is focusing on stocks that are not going to be impacted by today's market uncertainties.
COMMENT
He is not an expert on the tobacco companies, but sees them getting into cannabis as a smart move. He expects more tobacco companies to do the same. He does not know the company well enough to recommend a buy, but he is not interested.
TRADE
A lot of their business focuses on the oil and gas sector. They pay a decent dividend. He has never owned it. With LNG plans in BC moving forward, he thinks this should help.
HOLD
They started off with technology to deal with natural gas flares. A well company that has a lot of potential. He would stick with it.
HOLD
They make steel wire for fencing and nails. Currency weakness hurt them, but he feels they could be ripe for a turn around. He would continue to hold onto it. He will look into owing it again.
HOLD
He met the founder of the company years ago and he thought it was an interesting company, but never pulled the trigger. It hit a few speed bumps and thought they were improving their profitability. He would continue to hold it.
DON'T BUY
A market darling for many years, always beating analysts expectation. The rising multiples and a few missteps have caused it to fall from grace and he feels the company has been re-rated. He does not expect them to return to high multiples again. He would be cautious.
HOLD
They have some interesting blockchain technology. He thinks it may take longer to make money on this technology than people thought. He would continue to hold.
HOLD
They have an interesting copper discovery in Quebec. They have some size, which is great in the junior mining sector -- making them a good potential buyout. They are good cash holdings as well. He will continue to hold and is an owner today. It has a shot at a big win.
COMMENT
Gold Strategy. It will always be volatile. He reads a lot of analysts suggesting this is the time to get back into it -- especially with some market uncertainty. He prefers owning bullion bullion rather than individual companies. He thinks it is hard to find companies that avoid accidents. He likes owning a basket of stocks.
DON'T BUY
This company has never really made money. The time to buy is when they are in real trouble, because the government will always help them out. It is really a work creation strategy for the government in Quebec. It never makes money. He would trade it, but not own it long term.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Nov 16/17, Up 33%) It would have been even higher six months ago. They do sub-prime lending and have done a good job lowering their cost of capital. There is a lot of runway for growth. They pay a dividend, but have been smart with their cash management.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Nov 16/17, Down 21%) The housing market took a dip and this hurt the stock. He still owns it and thinks recent job creation will help their returns. They have not dropped their dividend yet. He hopes the earnings will increase to sustain the dividend. He will continue to hold it. Yield 11%.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Nov 16/17, Down 27%) When he picked it the PE was 12 and a yield of 4%. The PE has dropped to 9 and the yield has risen to over 5%, but he is no longer excited about their strategy. He may buy back, but it is out of the portfolio.
