Stocks edge down to end weak year
Markets ended 2022 in the red on a shortened session. The S&P finished -1.19% or -0.23% for the week, the Nasdaq -1.27% and -0.7% respectively, and the Dow -1.01% and -0.95%. The Dow was -9% for the year and the Nasdaq -33.5%.
Key movers on Fridaywere Amazon at -1.72%, Nvidia -1.42%, Carnival -1.49%, Etsy -3.7% while Take-Two Interactive gained 1.63%. The U.S. 10-year yield held around 3.879% while Bitcoin shed 0.5% to $16,500.
WTI rallied 1.77% to approach $80 and gave the TSX some lift. The Canadian index closed Friday -0.73% and -0.67% for the shortened week. Given the commodities boom, the TSX declined only 9% in 2022, faring better than the American indices. On Friday, Shaw Communications surged 9.31% and Rogers jumped 5.13% after the proposed merger cleared its latest legal hurdle. Athabasca Oil rose 3.86% though Shopify closed -1.75% and Capstone Copper -4%.
