After Labour Day, markets returned with a session that saw the Nasdaq edge up a few points to record closes while the DoW and S&P slipped and the TSX nearly closed on a high.

On Wall Street, the Apple rose 1.53% to help push the Nasdaq by 12 points to new heights of 15,374. Airbnb helped by adding 4.43% as did Ballard Power up 3.45%. Going the other direction was Activision Blizzard which closed 3.44% in heavy trading and Bed Bath & Beyond at -6.55%. The Dow slid 0.76%, weighed down by industrials, staples, healthcare and energy. Losing ground were 3M at -4.53%, Honeywell -2.35%, Amgen -2.22% and Coca-Cola at -1.87%. The S&P lost only 15 points. Gainers included Moderna jumping 4.73%, Netflix up 2.74%, and travel names including Wynn Resorts popping 5.61%. In cryptos, Bitcoin sank 10% to below $47,000 while gold also tumbled, down 2% to below $1,800 an ounce.

Oil also saw a weak session as WTI slid 1.35% to around $68 per barrel and WCS fell 1.85% to $56. This didn’t help the TSX which shed 14 points or 0.07%, and faded into the close. Only financials and tech flexed any muscle. Big movers included Denison Mines up 7.43%, Cameco soaring 7% and Teck Resources adding 2.89%. On the flipside were Kinross Gold finishing -2.32%, B2Gold at -3% and CN at -2.2% after Kansas City Southern announced it will be negotiating the rival Canadian Pacific, which actually closed -0.96%.
