Inflation continues to pressure markets
Wednesday’s higher than expected CPI number continued to pressure markets Thursday while financials and energy hampered the TSX. However, the major indices rallied towards the end to finish well into session highs. In New York, the S&P closed -0.3%, the Nasdaq was flat at 0.03% and the Dow -0.46%.
Among the few gainers were Costco up 4%, Qualcomm 4.62% and Apple 2.05%. Most names lost ground, particularly in energy and financials, including Bank of America -2.3%, Freeport-McMoRan -5.11%, Citigroup -2.99%, Meta -3.33% and JP Morgan -3.49%. The U.S. 10-year yield held at 2.96% while Bitcoin jumped nearly 5% to $20,600.
TSX finished -1.54% for the day. WTI held above $96 and WCS above $75. Industrials, tech and real estate were the worst performers. Major gainers included cannabis names, including Tilray which soared 16%, Aurora 14.12% and Canopy 9.59%. Otherwise, there was a lot of red on the screen, also led by energy and financials: Suncor -2.42%, Cenovus -2.58%, Barrick Gold -3.41%, Royal Bank -5.63% and Manulife -2.32% in heavy trading. Gold continued to slump, slipping 1.4% to $1,700.
