COMMENT

Natural gas futures 18 months out. Take a partial position in Tourmaline or Whitecap? We’re awash in gas in North America, with some liquified natural gas projects coming on in future that could soak up some of this. But now it’s just normal supply/demand. US shale is growing, so you have to contend with more gas in the Permian. Be cautious with gas going into the winter.

DON'T BUY

Tourmaline vs. Whitecap ( WCP-T ) Weighting in gas is weighing it down, you’re stuck competing against all the other gas producers. Whitecap is a more interesting name because of oil weighting, so they’d choose that one.

COMMENT

Whitecap vs. Tourmaline (TOU-T) Decent multiple, plus bunch of growth potential, pretty good rocks. Whitecap is a more interesting name because of oil weighting, so they’d choose that one.

DON'T BUY

Trican Well vs. Birchcliff (BIR-T) Be wary of Trican fracking right now, how much extra do you need. Tough to be a fracker up north, with most of the activity in the 48 states.

COMMENT

Birchcliff vs. Trican Well (TCW-T) Go with this instead of Trican Well. (Analysts’ price target is $6.44.)

COMMENT

Crew vs. Bonavista ( BNP-T ) Double down? Both have high weighting to gas, which will be a drag. Crew is cheaper on valuations, so go with that one. You don’t want to fight OPEC, oil will be range-bound.

COMMENT

Has been a popular stock, Aurora is entitled to about half their production. High multiple, so same issue with supply coming down the pipe. There are some cheaper names, based on exports and production levels, such as Hydropothecary. Good company, but facing industry-wide issues.

DON'T BUY

Former Cannabis Wheaton. At the end of the day, it comes down to management. They’ve had some missteps, hence the name change. There are enough sector issues, without dealing with management issues. Stick with a bigger name like Aphria.

COMMENT

Heavy oil producer, similar to CNQ. Beaten down with lower oil prices, because of their large debt. If you think oil is going higher than $80, then there’s an opportunity there as they work through their debt. No dividend.

COMMENT

WeedMD will supply what’s sold in Haiku stores. Haiku could be one of the main brands in Canada. Might be an interesting way to play the private retail industry when legalization comes through. You expect private retail to take on more and more of the market.

BUY

Suncor vs. Husky (HSE -T) Which has more room to grow? Both in same wheelhouse. Both have done well in downturn, Suncor a bit better, with decent dividend, good free cash flow, buying back stock. You could own Suncor and be happy. If you want the income, go with Suncor. Husky has less actual growth, but more upside, so if you want the appreciation go with Husky. You can’t lose with either, they’re both great.

Investor overlap in oil and marijuana? Retail investor is the one in the marijuana game, but institutional investors are the ones playing in oil.

COMMENT

For marijuana, buy one company or an ETF like HMMJ? The industry is young and small, so an ETF is not well diversified. If you have the time, pick the individual names because that’s where the real growth is. An ETF lets you be fully invested in the space if you don’t have the time.
