TOP PICK
Portfolios should have a core position in equities which should be cost effective, tax efficient and transparent. Indices are cost effective because of low MERs, tax effective as they don't create much capital gain. An average investor might have 70% in the core part and 30% in special situations, seasonal or hedge plays, etc.
TOP PICK
Selling CALLS against existing security positions. One of two things will happen. You'll either end up selling your stocks at a higher than current level or, if the market goes down, you are partially protected against the downside. A conservative way of investing, particularly for next year, when markets will probably not do that well.
TOP PICK
Important for timing purposes when opportunities arise.
HOLD
Just broke above its key resitance level and into a 4 year high. Volume is high. Seasonality is from end of Sept. to end of Jan. If you had done this trade during the last 10 periods, you made 6 profits out of 10 with an average return per period of 12%. Hold until the end of January.
BUY ON WEAKNESS
Has a nice upward trend with pretty good support at about $47. From an investment point of view, it makes sense to hold right through until late next year. Expecting US$ to temporarily strengthen causing gold to drop to around $430 and then go over $500. Any weakness will be a buying opportunity.
DON'T BUY
Had a good upward trend, but is starting to show a down trend despite gold and silver going up. Partly to do with the Cdn$ going higher
HOLD
Likes the merger with Wheaton River as it will create a large company with a lot of opportunities for reducing costs, liquidity becomes much better, etc. If you own, HOLD.
DON'T BUY
Financial services sector's seasonality is from the end of Sept to the end of December. In the last 10 periods, you would have made profits 10 out of 10 times with an average return per period of 10.3%. This one is still in an upward trend, but getting close to when you sell.
WAIT
Has dropped to a support level and technically is not in gear for another upward move yet. As we get into late January and get some quarterly results from them, it will be time to take a closer look.
HOLD
Caller is shorting this stock. Technically it is still in an upward trend and the trend is unlikely to change for a while. Seasonally, the sector's strength is from the end of September to the end of January. Look for very strong 4th quarter results followed by a drop. Don't SHORT!
HOLD
World steel producers can't produce enough steel, so steel stocks in general have done very well. Seasonality for steels is from the end of September to the end of January. Ipsco, which produces pipe looks very good and expect very strong 4th quarter results which will be the opportunity to take profits.
DON'T BUY
Industrial products normally does very well from Sept to Jan. This company is a special situation because of the difficulties they have been having. Will continue to be under pressure because of tax loss selling.
HOLD
Seasonality on tech stocks runs from end of Sept to end of January. If you had used this for the last 10 years, 8 out of 10 years would have realized a profit. The average return per period was 27.8%. Technically it currently has a nice up trend. Fundamentally, has a great product.
BUY
Energy stocks have a seasonality of January to May. Technically, it is in a nice up trend and looks like it wants to go gigher. On fundamentals, earnings are going to be very strong in the 4th quarter. Has a huch that analysts have underestimated the earnings for the company.
HOLD
In a period of seasonal strength. Company has given positive guidance for the 4th quarter. Hold for now, but WATCH the stock around the end of January.
