Wall Street fades, but TSX rallies
A rebound in crude oil helped lift the TSX by 1.1% on Monday. WTI soared $4.50 to $102 and WCS jumped $2.30 to nearly $79. Most sectors were in the green except consumer staples which lagged.
Big gainers were Canopy Growth by 15.46%, Marathon Gold at 12.1%, Precision Drilling 9.02% and Athabasca Oil soaring 12.81%. Heading south were Cascades which shed nearly 7% and Goodfood Market down 5.15%.
In contrast, U.S. stocks started the week positive but faded until the S&P closed -0.84%, the Nasdaq -0.81% and the Dow -0.69%. Consumer, financials and healthcare lagged. Influential names were Apple at -2.06%, Alphabet (A class) -2.35%, Regeneron -3.35%, Thermo Fisher -3.3% and Danaher -3.38%. Among the bright spots were Booking Holdings up 2.27%, Goldman Sachs adding 2.28% after a beat, Carnival 5.12%, Nucor 3.62% and Hess Corp. at 4.82%. The U.S. 10-year yield held right below 3% while Bitcoin rose 2.6% to $21,500. Earnings season will continue this week on Wall Street.
