TSX flat, Wall Street declines on hot employment numbers
The TSX closed Friday up 18 points and 0.7% for the week. Staples and energy rallied even though WTI oil declined 3.5% to $73 and WCS fell 4% below $51. Major movers included Canada Goose which soared 14.64% after diving the day before, Open Text up 5.06%, Methanex 7.32% though goldminers Kinross and Barrick sank 4.08% and 4.73% respectively.
It was a different story on Wall Street as the strongest employment numbers ever in American peacetime were released, rattling investors. The S&P closed Friday down 1%, but gained 2% for the week, the Dow shed 0.38% and the Nasdaq declined 1.59% for the session but still advanced 4.3% for the week. It was a good week for communications, discretionary and certainly tech, but a bad one for energy, utilities and health care.
Regeneron gained 4.2%, Clorox 9.77% and Apple 2.44% despite delivering a miss, while Amazon slid 8.45% after its own report and Ford sank 7.61%. The U.S. 10-year yield held at 3.52% while Bitcoin retreated 0.5% to around $23,300.
