S&P and Nasdaq reach new highs, TSX fades
The start of the new trading week extended record gains made in the last one as the S&P and Nasdaq reached new highs at Monday’s close. The S&P added 0.77% to 5,472 and the Nasdaq 0.95% to 17,857.
As usual, tech drove the gains with Apple rallying another 1.97% to make its own record high, Tesla jumping 5.3%, Intel 1.74% and Microsoft reaching a new high by advancing 1.31%. However, Nvidia retreated 0.68% to snap its winning streak. The Dow rose 0.49%. The 10-year yield hovered around 4.28% as Bitcoin slipped 0.65% to US$66,200.
The TSX continued to lose ground, finishing down 0.31% or 68 points. Only three sectors gained, led by staples, while utilities and materials led the laggards. Major movers: TC Energy -1.5%, Pembina -2.61%, Boyd Group -3.58% and Cargojet 2.87%. Gold gave back US$13 to US$2,319 an ounce while WTI rallied US$4 to US$80.50 a barrel.
