Mixed markets to end record week
Friday saw mixed trading on Wall and Bay streets to conclude a week where the three major U.S. indices and the TSX technically (and briefly) made record highs. The S&P closed flat on Friday to remain at Thursday’s record high, though gained 2.3% for the week. The Nasdaq made a new record high Friday at 16,441 and gained 2.85% for the week. Meanwhile, the Dow sank 0.62% for the session, but still advanced 2% over the week. Earnings drove key names on Friday.
FedEx reported a mixed quarter but still impressed investors who pushed it 7.55% higher. Faring less well were Lululemon at -15.8% and Nike at -6.64%. AES rallied 3.33% and Nvidia added 3.09%. The U.S. 10-year yield hovered around 4.21% while Bitcoin declined 2.6% to $63,800.
The TSX closed Friday -0.4% though added 0.62% for the week. More sectors declined than advanced on Friday, as consumer staples gained the most as real estate, discretionary and telcos sank the furthest. Tilray soared nearly 20%, but Osisko Mining closed -4/9%, Power Corporation -4.62% as the most-traded name and Birchcliffe Energy -3.75%. WTI slipped 0.35% to $80.80 a barrel while gold retreated 0.8% to $2,160 an ounce.
