Flat Friday snaps 9-week streak
Major indices on both sides of the border snapped a 9-week winning streak despite a flat Friday to cap the first trading week of 2024. For the session, the S&P added nine points, the Dow 25 and the Nasdaq 13. Over the week, the S&P sank 1.8%, the Nasdaq lost 3.8% and the Dow slipped 0.62%.
Apple traded the most hands on Friday and closed the day -0.64% after suffering downgrades during the shortened trading week. However, Nvidia rose 2.03%, American Airlines 3.93%, Southwest Airlines 3.9% and MSCI closed -3.64%. The U.S. 10-year yield returned to 4% after surging all week. Elsewhere, Bitcoin declined 1% to $43,800. Wall Street greeted the latest jobless news positively at first, but wavered throughout the day.
The TSX added 0.25% for the day and finished nearly flat for the week. Most sectors climbed higher, led by financials, real estate and energy. Industrials and staples sank. Notable names were Precision Drilling up 5.3%, Bausch Health 5.28%, Aritizia -4.91%, First Quantum Minerals -2.84% and TD which added 0.51% as the most-traded stock. WTI surged 2.3% to nearly $74 a barrel.
