The markets on friday

Markets closed at session highs to cap another choppy week of trading. The TSX closed 0.33% higher on Friday and 1.35% for the week. Energy and tech propelled the rise while staples and real estate sank. Given Russian-Ukrainian military tensions, WTI crude rose 2.5% past $82 a barrel, while WCS spiked 5% to break $71. This helped make Suncor the most-traded stock in Toronto, up 1.69%, and lifted Cenovus by 3.33%, Baytex by 4.87% and both Crescent Point and CNQ by 3.61%.

Pot names Fire & Flower rallied nearly 9% and Hexo 2.6%, while Shopify halted its recent slide by bouncing 3.68%. On the downside, First Quantum Minerals slid 3%, SNC-Lavalin retreated 4.64% and Stelco fell 3.5%. The Canadian dollar held steady right below $0.80 against the USD.

On Wall Street, disappointing retail numbers and varied U.S. bank earnings pressured markets, though the day ended mixed. The Dow closed -0.56%, the S&P 0.08% and the Nasdaq 0.75% as tech modestly rebounded. Meta/Facebook advanced 1.66%, Lam Research 6.27% and AMD 3.12%. JPMorgan sank 6.15% after lowering guidance and Goldman Sachs tumbled 2.52%. Elsewhere, Baker Hughes rallied 4.53% and Diamondback Energy advanced 4.13%. Travel names roared back as Las Vegas Sands jumped 14.15% and Wynn Resorts 8.6%. However, American Airlines dove 4.4%, Affirm Holdings sank 4.08% and Beyond Meat slid 6%. The S&P and Nasdaq were down marginally for the week, though the Dow shed over 1%. Finally, the U.S. 10-year yield ticked down to 1.786% by the Friday close while Bitcoin continued to slump, down 1.5% to trade over $43,000.
