Consumer discretionary normally underperforms the market at this time of year. Technically the chart shows it is on a downward trend. Performance relative to the TSE is negative. Also, trading below its 20 day moving average. It is coming down close to its longer-term support, and if it bounces from that level, it will be an opportunity to take another look. Seasonally these stocks do very well from October to at least the end of the year.

Energy stocks in Canada typically do very well from October right through until around May. The index and the units have rolled over in the last little while, and have gone below the 20 day moving average. Good news is that the next period of seasonal strength for Canadian energy starts right around the last week in July and goes through until October. Technicals are not positive yet, so watch for them to start normalizing.

Canadian lumber stocks have 2 very distinct periods of seasonality. Historically the best time to Buy is around October, and the best time to take profits is around April. From April to October, seasonality is negative.

Nickel prices in general have been showing some pretty good improvement. However, this one is not so good. Chart shows this trading on the downside, and recently broke a key support level. Underperforming the market.

The key with the volatility index is that there are 2 ways of playing it. There is a speculative way, which is not recommended. Then there is the conservative way which is basically to buy the volatility index as portfolio protection. Seasonality on this is that it bottoms in the 1st week of July, and then goes higher right through until the middle of October.
