TSX hits high, Wall Street flat
As the post-election rally faded in the U.S., the TSX climbed 0.26% higher on Wednesday to make a new closing high. It was just shy of 25,000, led by outsized gains in tech stocks. Actually, only four of 11 sectors rose on Bay Street while materials and staples led the laggards lower.
Key names: CAE 11.94%, Suncor 4.21%, Shopify 5.87% after a strong rally the day before, Orla Mining -9.76% and Finning -9.11%. WTI remained flat around US$68, while gold gave back US$24 to US$2,573.
In New York, the S&P finished flat while the Dow gained 0.11% and the Nasdaq closed -0.26%. Major movers included Warner Bros. Discovery up 5.24%, Intel 3.15%, Albemarle 5.24%, Resmed -4.76% and Nvidia -1.36% as the most-traded name. The U.S. 10-year yield inched up to 4.45% as Bitcoin continued its record-high run, by advancing 0.7% to US$88,945. Tempering the mood was October’s inflation figure of 2.6%, which was higher than expected.
