TSX and oil climb, Wall Street pauses
Wednesday saw the TSX rise 0.64% to approach 22,200 and flirt with all-time highs. All but three sectors were positive on Bay Street, particularly materials as well as energy, while telcos lagged the most.
Outsized moves came from First Quantum Minerals which soared 12.49%, Lundin Minerals up 9.65%, Teck Resources 8.04%, Kinross Gold 4.05% and Cameco closing -5.81%. Also flirting with new highs was gold which edged up to $2,170 an ounce.
In New York, the Dow was flat, adding 37 points to top 39,000, but the Nasdaq sank 0.54% and the S&P shed 0.19%. Notable names included Freeport-McMoRan which jumped 7.56%, 3M up 5.42%, Valero 5.24% and Tesla which closed -4.54%. Dollar Tree announced store closures and the stock plunged 14.21%. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.188% as Bitcoin climbed 2.5% to hover around highs of $73,200.
