Tech leads Friday slide
The post-U.S. election rally was definitely over by Friday with all major indices on Wall Street selling sharply. Tech, which rallied the most after the vote, sank the most during the session and week. The Nasdaq closed the day -2.24% or down more than 400 points, and -3.15% for the week. The S&P finished -1.32% and the Dow -0.7% on Friday, and over -2% and -1.25% respectively for the week.
Key movers: Palantir soared 11.14%, Disney extended Thursday’s gains by 5.46%, Applied Materials -9.2%, Moderna -7.34% and Nvidia -3.26% as the most-traded name. The U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.428% while Bitcoin continued its record run by adding 3.6% to US$91,370.
A day after closing at record highs, the TSX gave back 0.63% to finish below 25,000, but advanced 0.5% for the week. Only utilities advanced while discretionary was flat and healthcare and energy led all other sectors down. Major movers: Enbridge -1.96%, CNQ -2.59%, Tourmaline -2.28%, Aya Gold & Silver popping 7.8% and Birchcliffe Energy -3.7%. Gold shed US$2.50 to US$2,60 while WTI slipped 2.4% to US$67 a barrel. Next week, the markets will focus on Nvidia’s latest earnings.
