Nvidia leads tech higher

Markets in Toronto and New York modestly extended Monday’s gains, with tech once more leading the way. A catalyst was U.S. consumer inflation coming in slightly lighter than expected, up 0.2% in April to reduce the annual increase from 2.4% to 2.3%.
Tech bulls seized the moment to push the most influential names higher: Nvidia 5.63%, Tesla 4.43% and Palantir 8.14%. Meanwhile, health insurers were among the laggards, notably UnitedHealth -17.79% and Elevance Health -9.91%. Bitcoin rose 1.8% to US$104,540 while the U.S. 10-year yield crept up to 4.471%.
The TSX advanced 0.33% amid mixed trading. Energy outperformed all sectors while telcos and healthcare lagged the most. Influential names were led by CNQ up 2.21%, Whitecap Resources 3.2% and Baytex 8.91%. Elsewhere, Orla Mining sank 6.64% while Finning International soared 13.78%. Gold rose US$16 to US$3,253 while WTI jumped 2.7% to US$63.63.
