New highs despite low volumes
On Monday, the S&P and Nasdaq made yet more record closes despite weak volumes and modest gains. The S&P added five points and the Nasdaq 0.28% for the session, while the Dow actually shed 31 points.
Big semi names, Nvidia and Intel, were the most influential stocks, up 1.72% and 6.11% respectively. Paramount Global closed its deal with Skydance Media, but its shares slid 5.17%, while Corning jumped nearly 12% and Etsy sank 5.25%. The U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.277% as Bitcoin regained 0.8% to US$56,300. Tomorrow, the latest American inflation data will hit the street.
The TSX rallied 0.85% as all sectors but materials gained. Consumer staples were especially strong, followed by real estate and financials. The most influential names on Bay Street were TD, up 0.85%, and Power Corp. up 1.68%. Lundin Mining surged 5.29%, Brookfield Business Partners rose 5.01% and First Quantum Minerals declined 4.64%. Gold fell US$33 to US$2,358, and WTI gave back over 1% to US$82.26 a barrel.
