Markets end week higher on soft inflation
The indices in New York and Toronto edged up on Friday to finish the week higher. The past week’s weaker-than-inflation numbers in the U.S drove the rally. The three New York indices gained over 0.2% on Friday. While the Nasdaq was flat for the week, the S&P jumped 4% and the Dow 3%, indicating a continuing rotation out of tech, or a broadening of the rally.
Key movers on Friday: Nvidia up 1.4%, Dexcom 3.16%, Ulta Beauty 3.12%, Chipotle -2.78% and Palo Alto Networks -2.67%. The U.S. 10-year yield declined to 3.887% while Bitcoin leapt about 5% to nearly US$59,500.
The TSX added 15 points on Friday, but rose 3.33% over the week. Major names on Friday included CAE at -3.4%, Suncor -1.01%, Denison Mines -2.74% and New Gold up 6.36%. Speaking of which, the shiny rock climbed by US$42 to US$,2509 while WTI sank 1.75% to US$76.80. Next week marks the start of Canadian bank earnings.
