Nasdaq climbs to cap negative week
Friday’s rally in semis helped lift the Nasdaq to an intraday high before the index peeled back to close 0.56% higher. For the week, the Nasdaq barely finished positive, up only 0.16%. Meanwhile, the S&P was flat on Friday and -1% for the week, while the Dow closed -0.61% during the session and -2.7% for the week.
Major movers included Deckers, jumping 10.57%, Tesla 3.34% and Bank of America at -1.78%. A judge blocked Capri‘s purchase of Tapestry which saw the former tank by 48.89% and the latter rally by 13.54%. The U.S. 10-year finished the week above 4.2% while Bitcoin rose 2.15% to US$66,685.
In Canada, the TSX ended Friday -0.38% and -1.45% for the week which saw the Bank of Canada cut the key interest rate by an expected 50 basis points. Only two sectors rose, led by energy, while consumer discretionary and real estate led the laggards. Key names: Winpak up 4.54%, Interfor 9%, Barrick Gold -3.16%, StorageVault -6.89% and Equinox Gold -3.94%. Gold itself added another US$7 to US$2,743 to cap a week of fresh highs while WTI crude rose 1.45% to US$71.64. Next week, the megatech stocks will report.
